After the events of the Two Towers, Saruman the white fled middle earth in a small ship and arrived on the rocky shores of MDI. Since his fall from grace he has taken the name "Visvader" and is condemned to wander the woods of Maine.

I came into this course as a Freshman interested in philosophy. Although this class was definitely interesting, the professor talks, and talks, and talks to the point where it's monotonous and you just want to leave and go outside or do something productive. It's an interesting class and Visvader's knowledgeable, but this definitely was not for me.

As some others have already said, John leads class and students by example. his knowledge on the topic and world in general nearly unmatched. He is one of the reasons i too have dedicated myself to teaching. and also the reason why i think i managed to come to grip with my philosophical reality GO JOHN!

John was my professor (as a grad student) at the University of Minnesota long before the internet. He set the bar for teachers then, as he apparently still does. I've been teaching now for over 40 years, to similar rave reviews. I credit his teaching. He showed, by example, how to connect clearly and profoundly with students, as he did with me.

Visvader is the man. One of the best teachers I've ever had, and completely sincere, caring, and inspirational. Don't take his classes if you want an easy ride, but if you want to learn, there is no better man to teach you.

with visvader, learning comes so effortlessly. has knowledge in an unbelievable # of areas, and sees the insights of and (more commonly) problems with any theory instantly. does away with bad theories, bad questions, dogmatism and relativism. and he's a real human being, in the best possible sense: really kind and caring. personable and hilarious

What can one say about John in 300 characters or less? Intellegent, worldly, able to see the heart of just about anything-but confusuing because he never takes a complete stance on anything-an awkward (non)position for a philosophy professor.

I'll never look at nonmonotonic logic the same! Not only does John understand deontic logic, he can really do the robot! Nobody has ever connected Gaia to set theory and free logics before, but John did! Not only is the world a bonafide being, but it obeys the rules of logic quite well!
