Conlee has a really dry sense of humor, which makes lectures about Old and Middle English literature somewhat entertaining. Graded on 6 quizzes, a take home midterm and final, and 2 papers. Pretty fair grader on all of those. Would recommend to anyone interested in the topic.

I did not enjoy this class when I took it and my grade suffered. It's a lecture-heavy class with nitpicky quizzes/exams that focus more on quirks of the texts like the exact color/appearance/phrase identification rather than meaning. I've done well in higher-level Engl courses here so this class was a bit of a doozy. Better 203 alternatives.

This is my 2nd class with Conlee, and I am loving it! He's a genuine expert in his field and has traveled to many of the locations that we read about, and punctuates the class with fantastic anecdotes. He bases your grade on 5 quizzes (a tad nitpicky, but he announces them ahead of time), 2 papers (graded fairly), and a final. Definitely recommend!

I've taken several classes with Conlee and he's one of my favorite professors here. The topics of his classes aren't for everyone (not many people want to struggle through all the Welsh names in the Mabinogion) but for people who're interested you can't do better than him. Relaxed and fun in the classroom, and pretty generous on the grading.

Professor Conlee is a nice man and very knowledgeable about the subject material, but expects a lot of reading outside of class to prepare for lectures and discussion. You're graded on 2 papers, 5-6 quizzes, a midterm and a final, and as long as you do the readings you should be fine for all of those.

I loved my classes with Conlee. Funny, sweet guy - there for you no matter if it's Arthurian and Celtic lit or baseball interests or real life questions. Full of fun. Pop quizzes aren't hard if you read (note details & weird stuff - that's what he wants). Took Arthurian, Celtic, and Malory with him. Would take all again.

A cool guy who makes Lord of the Rings references. His classes were interesting if you like the material, but that pretty much goes for any English class. He announced quizzes ahead of time. Some questions were very specific, but he gave multiple extra credit questions per quiz. Fair grader on essays. Moderately easy exam as long as you study.

For this Brit Lit course, Prof. Conlee gave 6 quizzes (which are really specific), 2 papers, a take home midterm and a final. If you are not an excellent reader or if English is your second language, this may not be the class for you. Sparknotes is helpful, but relying on that wout reading the material will not help you pass. SHOW UP in lectures.

Good professor overall. 6 reading quizzes, take-home midterm, final, and two papers. Quizzes are really nitpicking but I can't say they didn't make me a better reader. Fair grader if you put in reasonable effort and he'll like you if you show up and participate. Makes dry readings interesting by highlighting risqué content and puns.

LOVE Conlee. He's fun, knows more about Celtic and Arthurian texts than it seems possible to know, and is very approachable. Truly a fantastic professor and one of my favorites in the department.

This is the first English course I took at W&M. I loved it, Conlee was awesome. Really nice, really funny, and makes lots of LOTR references. Even though the pieces we read were pretty difficult his lectures (note this isn't really a discussion based class) were really interesting. Quizes weren't bad, 2 papers and a final. Grades seemed fair

Prof. Conlee is old-school in lecture style, but is a fantastic teacher. Really knows his stuff (expertise in this field of English). Must close-read for quizzes (very nit-picky), and is a tough grader for papers. Not difficult to get decent grade with some effort put forth.

Knows everything there is to know about the Middle English period and Arthurian legend in particular. An amazingly fair grader, great sense of humor, promoted a great atmosphere in class, and is generally about the smartest and most friendly professor I have ever met. TAKE HIS CLASSES, especially seminars!

Really enjoyed this class! Lectures and readings were interesting - it's obvious that Conlee knows a lot about the subject. Quizzes were often challenging, he does quiz on very minute details. However, if you actually do the readings (and read closely), you will do fine. Final exam and papers were fairly easy. Loved this class and Professor Conlee

Conlee is really funny and I was never bored in class. He explains the readings extremely well and although quizzes cover details you might not have considered if you read closely you will do fine. I liked his teaching style and hope to have him for another class in the future. Take his class!

Funny guy, but his lectures tended to put me to sleep. His quizes will usually have questions that reference some obscure detail, otherwise they're not that bad. I think he asks those questions to make sure you truly read. He is very relaxed when it comes to grading papers. OMG his midterm and final are ridiculous, almost impossible to do well on.
