Logic 1 & 2. He's "cruel" in L1 for good reason: L2 is excruciating; Yet, it can be interesting provided you're solid and comfortable in L1. Drop L1 early if you're not into it. Pro tip: Read L1 course description, work hard on literally any "symbolic logic" textbook's problem sets during summer before class. He's actually mostly very kind

I learned how to think harder, which sounds hilarious, but it payed off for me personally. He can be intimidating, some said he was horribly brutal, which may be true. But, he will be there for you provided you want to learn or need help. Even his help during office hours was difficult. Grad students in class were very annoying.

It is not too homework heavy but there are a few assignments. Really have to study, read on your own, and seek help from him or friends if you don't understand the material. The exams are challenging. I would not take this class unless you are serious about majoring in philosophy

This is a tough class, and if you're taking it as a gen-ed I would suggest you not take this course. If you want to do well you should go to all lectures and discussion and pay attention. Also use the outside class resources because that's what really helps. I think Professor Jarrett does his best, but it's difficult material.

First off, this is NOT a blow-off class! You MUST attend class and ask for help if needed. Many people retake it. However, professor Jarrett is very kind and willing to meet individually with students whenever you need him. I did not do well on the exams but he curves and takes your effort into account. Overall, a very nice man and good teacher.

He was very nice, but this class was insanely hard. He made it even worse. Didn't explain well. I got a C and thought I'd failed. He gives little feedback. Unless you're a high level math whiz DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS..involves too much symbolic math.

Nice guy, reasonable. Hard to understand because he is soft spoken. Subject is tough so if you aren't committed don't take the class. You really need to use your TAs for this one if you want to pass.

Come to class energized if you don't want to read; if you fail to pay attention for a moment during lecture you might get lost (catch up by re-reading the chapter). It's very important to keep up, if you are a few days behind you will be lost. Jon is good at translating confusing material into clear, understandable language. Helpful in office.

Cool guy, obvious that he knows what he's talking about. Lecture drags on sometimes in the beginning of the semester but things become harder and somehow more fun, you do these logic puzzles. They get hard. I was very scared for my grade. Low test scores even though I really liked the class, thankfully the curve gave me a B.

of course this is a hard class. i have a feeling that everyone who is complaining really didnt devote their time to it. Prof. Jarrett taught at Harvard before UIC, so he is obviously not a bad teacher. dude is a genius. as far as the class with him, u cant think of it as just another class, logic is amazing

Could be worse, he is hard to follow in lecture but it will make sense when you go to discussion....maybe. He grades on a curve and determines your grade based on improvement in the class so if you do bad on the first test...just do better on the next. I would take him again..but not for PHIL102

This class was very hard, but Jarrett was really helpful outside of class. He is approachable and had weekly extra help sessions. He tries hard to be understanding and made it hard to completely fail the class. There was an extreme grading curve. I was worried about my low test grades but I ended up with a B in the class.

lots of physics references. he's very laid back about turning things in late. super helpful, you just have ask and he'll try his best to figure out what he can do.

Interesting class; however, all of his examples are based in physics. If you aren't very well versed in physics it tends to lead to more confusion than necessary. He is a pretty genuine teacher though.

One of the hardest classes I have ever had! You need to go to lecture and study! However, if you need the help go and get it, he will try his hardest to get you to understand and pass!

HARD!HARD!HARD!Lets just say it like this! After 2 years in college, by GPA was 4.00/4.00. After I took his class, it definitely dropped. This is the hardest class I have ever taken and I on my 4th year now. The problem is not so much the professor, it is the class itself that is do damn hard.

Going to lecture isn't all that helpful- he tends to overcomplicate what he's explaining. VERY monotonous and boring. Spends the entire 50 minutes (even more) getting down to business, never once veered off topic. BORING. He knows his stuff and he's clear and smart, it's just hard to learn from him. Discussion definitely mandatory.

In lecture, he may seem boring, but he is the most helpful person outside of them. He's incredibly generous with your office hours - all you need to do is take the initiative, and he's very clear and helpful if you come in with a concrete question.
