Professor Chaves is really REALLY passionate about Chinese literature. He makes the material interesting. Going to lecture is the most important thing you can do to get an A in this class. There's a LOT of reading but he makes it VERY clear in class what names and terms you need to know for the exams. He really makes himself available to help, too.

Chaves is an amazing guy. He is the ultimate balance of knowledgeable and laid back, and single-handedly made me consider changing my major to literature simply through his enthusiasm. However! His lectures are totally unstructured, the expected reading is insane, and these make studying for the exams an absolute killer.

Chaves is definitely the funniest professor ever and he knows what he's talking about. He will go on hysterical rants, but he can even make the most boring topics seem exciting. I learned a lot this semester.

CHAVES IS THE MAN!!! I wish we could clone him and put a few Chaves in every Department in the University. The world and GWU would be all the better. His knowledge of the class material and its historical context is incredible. On top of that he's one of the few remaining professors who see the world as it is and isn't afraid to give you the truth.

Great professor, with a raunchy sense of humor. He only gives glimpses of his intellectual genius, but most of the time, he is on one diatribe or the next. It's a fun class, but it's about 50/50 between time spent learning and time spent laughing.

Excellent professor. Loves the subject matter and teaches it really enthusiastically. If you have no sense of humor or are easily offended, do not take him: he makes jokes the entire class, some of which, while racey, leave the class laughing hysterically. Otherwise, top-notch professor for the class.

Professor Chaves pretends to be mean, if you get to know him, he is so nice. I adore him, and I hated his class all semester, it's not hard, i just am not interested in Chinese Lit. He is so lenient. He is simply too smart to talk to. I feel inferior talking to him, he should teach at the Ph.D level

His lecture is sooo interesting, but his test are kind of hard if you think this class is an easy A class. Well, I have taken both of 111 and 112, no matter how much I study, I always get and B....

Quality teacher. Extremely knowledgable of subjeect. A little eccentric at times, but completely harmless and funny. Wants to see his students achieve. His lectures are key. Go to class. Readings are interesting and helpful, but not essential. One of the best teachers at GW!
