No need for book, I'm a nerd who reads for most classes but not for this one lol. I hate philosophy with a passion and still do, but schaffer is the man and knows the material is hard. Exams are a breeze if you go to class. He wants you to do well (told TAs to curve exam to a B average)

If you are looking for an easy gen ed, here you go. definitely have to show up for class because tests are based nearly 100% on notes. I never read the book until i needed it as a refrence for papers. Very clear and energetic. All the TA's are good. Discussion sections not mandatory. Easy A. Highly recommend.

OK, so at first it may be overwhleming cuz philosophy is kinda hard to understand/ get ur head around sometimes BUT you dont need to read the book, just take down his notes in class and study them for the tests/papers. Umm discussion AREN't mandatory but are valuable when the papers are due. This class is doable, i think i'm going to get an A!

Meh.. if you want an easy A, here's place to get it. But Jonathan is not helpful and is very narrow-minded in his philosophy. There is no debate in disucssions. I fell asleep everyday in lecture and honestly tried to stay awake

A must take class at UMass. 2 exams, 2 papers, no attendance needed. I attended this class for the first lecture, to turn in two papers, and to take two exams, nothing else, got an easy A. For the exams just memorize his online notes and repeat them on the test, DEFINITELY take this class.

If you are non-christian, the first part of the class on religion will bother you. The classes are boring and the whole course is one big contradiction. This is a philosophy class, where they pretend to encourage "creativity" and your own views, but in the exams and papers, they want text book answers. The TA's is awesome and discussion is great!

Great class, Jonathan's the man. I actually looked forward to lectures. If you hate philosophy, then of course it will be boring to you. I'm not even a huge fan of the subject and it was one of the best classes I've taken so far. Exams and essays (2 each)are fair, and all the notes are all online
