Comment:
For the first fee weeks we did not have a syllabus and she was not clear about what needed to be done. Her grading system was very unclear, it appeared to be something she made up as she went a long. When it comes to grading papers about her book she is ever worse. She was dismissive when we brought our concerns to her and she makes fun of students

Worst professor I've ever had! 80% of your grade is quizzes with confusing questions and she doesn't even go over what you need to study. Juanita is a tyrant who will take off points for anything under the sun if you don't 100% agree with her point of view. Save yourself and everyone you know the headache!! Avoid her at all cost!

The worst professor I've ever had. She assigns around 200-300 pages of reading a week and has weekly quizzes and all the questions are on extremely minor details. You have to write a paper on observations at Binghamton City Court and she will fail you. Everyone in my class failed except for one person. Don't do it to yourself. Just don't do it

Diaz-Cotto didn't remember my name after I sat in the front of both classes with her one semester (SOC480 & SOC340). She lost peoples' papers. She grades super tough. But at the end of the semester I was glad to have had her. Her perspective taught me a lot and if she sees you put in the work you'll be ok. I got 4/10s on papers and still got an A.

Juanita Diaz is a very intelligent and interesting professor. She assigns a lot of course reading material but at least all of it is interesting. I learned a lot from taking her class. Would not recommend to the weak willed.

Comment:
Juanita is very intelligent and passionate. She cares about the topics she discusses, but doesn't like to hear much of anything that doesn't agree with her opinion. She's not clear with instructions. We have loads of reading every week but never know what to focus on for the quiz. She's a great person, but I wouldn't take a class of hers again.

Professor Diaz-Cotto was very knowledgable of her studies. She has a passion for her culture and latin america. However, the workload for this class were really heavy. Although class meets once a week, she gives 100 - 300 pages of reading and quizzes every week. In her defence, it was because she had that much work during her college days.

If I could go back in time and save myself the torture of taking this course with this professor I would do it. If you care about your sanity, run. If you have a full time job, don't expect her to care whether or not your employer will give you time off to attend her MANDATORY court observation. Do not expect your paper to matter.

The class itself is extremely interesting but Diaz isn't the kindest person. She waves off students a lot and makes you work for your grade. There quizzes almost every week based on all the readings (which is a lot). She also requires you to go to court for 6 for a final paper. Difficult class even though the material was intriguing. Good luck.

Diaz is fair, but you may not find her to be kind. She is passionate about her research and created lesson plans with great flow. She provides significant material and you leave the class with new information and perspective. Be prepared, she is not always organized, time efficient, or forgiving. But take this class to learn, not to enjoy.

She is a wonderful lady and extremely passionate about the subject. However, be prepared to read thousands of pages (no joke). It's all super interesting though. She is a tough grader, but helps you improve your writing. 10/10 would recommend a class with her!

Prof. Diaz should not be allowed into a classroom, period. She gives long readings and quizzes on the major details. 70% of your grade will come from quizzes on things she has not lectured on. She regularly forgets her own material and reads her lectures from yellowed, tattered old scripts. Her lectures are rarely coherent. Worst professor at BU.

I would never wish this class on my worst enemy. She is rude, disorganized and too smart for her own good. She has no idea how to interact with students in a respectful manner and the class is not worth it.

Awful awful awful. The class was very interesting but it not only felt like your opinion didn't matter if it wasn't aligned with hers, but also if you weren't a minority it felt like she dismissed you even further.. Ridiculous. So many papers, wasn't clear at all about what she wanted, graded harshly with minimal feedback. Avoid at all cost.

She is very well educated and passionate about the subject. However, the lectures are long and unstructured. Mostly, she talks at the class about her opinion, and notes are not necessary. The bulk of the grade comes from the short quizzes that are based on long and tedious readings assigned for the week. I would not recommend this class to anyone.

Class is formatted in that you meet once a week, and do readings for each class and then get quizzed on each readings. 11 quizzes, she takes the best 9. There's a paper, but she's very unclear about instructions. Lectures are long, not very discussion based and she's not good at explaining assignments. I wouldn't recommend this class.

Professor Diaz may not get along with some but as one of the final four, I can say that Diaz is a good professor. She challenges you to actually work on the project and avoid passiveness. She may sometimes be unclear with direction, but ultimately she is willing to answer questions if needed. She's great but it is a lot to handle.

Professor Diaz is a very special person. She has very strong beliefs and if you don't agree, you are wrong. However, she is fair and if you do the readings you will be able to receive a good grade. Though I had zero interest in the class, I think overall i learned a lot and she somehow made the subject interesting
