Comment:
I'm a non-native speaker and this class helped me work out a lot of small mistakes I kept making. Be thankful Kempff teaches it- he has a very thorough manner of explaining concepts. He's also one of the most approachable Spanish professors I've had, despite an intimidating first impression.

a lot of people don't appreciate his dry humor, but he really is a great lecturer/person. easy (and very willing) to talk to you, especially to help you understand class topics. tests can be difficult if you don't know your stuff, so study and you'll be fine. best part: no homework or cumulative final :-)

Dude knows his stuff. He can seem intimidating in the beginning, but he really is a cool guy. Going to his office hours helps a lot too. The class can get confusing at times, but he's totally willing to help. He's kinda hard...but fair.

Just thought I had to respond. No wonder Kempff backed his TAs and not the guy below. Sounds like a case of sour grapes. Try being less of a snot and maybe your problems will disappear. You could have gotten a bad TA, got a less than sympathetic shake from Kempff but take a look at yourself before criticizing others.

This guy runs the Spanish language series for undergrads. He just plain sucks. If you have a problem with one of your crappy TA's he hires to teach you Spanish, forget about talking to him. You'll just leave his office frustrated and pissed off. The Spanish department and it's student teachers are the biggest joke at UCI.

Dr. Kempff is tough but fair, even personable once you get to know him. Go to class prepared and try to catch him outside of class. He's open to questions, especially if they're well formulated. Just be prepared to listen by doing homework and being attentive.

Comment:
Don't listen to these malcontents. Dr. Kempff knows his linguistics, is a solid director of the Spanish-language program. Linguistics is not a soft science and Dr. Kempff expects you to do the reading and do solid analysis and application of concepts. No work & your grade reflects it (even for grad students!) Great prof despite complaints here!

Comment:
There is no book for this class. All there is to study is what he says and maybe some small packets he hands out which are in linguistics jargon are unintelligible. Note: he'll humiliate you if you speak/if you answer something incorrectly. Know definitions and explanations (use his if possible)

Stop whining! You guys are used to someone giving you the answers without asking you to think.Instead of complaining, start using the grey matter that is in your brain and learn the language that you be teaching one day. AND, ASK QUESTIONS!! however, make sure that they a bit intelligent.

If you are brave enough to ask a question, you will most likely be treated like an idiot. He thinks that you should already know the stuff that he is supposed to be teaching you.

has unrealistic expectations for his undergrad students and sometimes seems to prefer teaching through ritual humiliation. avoid at all costs if you're not a relatively confident speaker of Spanish.

He is the reason why so many students receive lower than expected grades in Spanish. He thinks that the scores students receive are "too high". I believe he's one of the reasons this school's Spanish department is dwindling.

Great guy once you figure him out. Very clear, very sharp. Seems standoffish at first, but that's mostly cause he doesn't want to baby you. He'll point you in the right direction and then expects you to find your way.
