Comment:

Given that there aren't many choices for Master's Program, you will take him. No db exp(surprisingly for Master's there were many) is not good. Must how to write SQL, course focuses most on B trees, block access, and fd. Choice of paper, database prj, or write dbms Very hard final questions based on textbook. Even with db exp, class was hard.

OK guy I guess but has a thick accent. Tough to understand and monotone when he lectures. Looks at the ceiling when he speaks instead of at the class. 4 hour boring lectures. Class was brutally difficult and the final exam seemed deliberately designed to drop your grade and weed people out. Not a very helpful professor. Would never take again! C-

Comment:

Great professor, I learned a great deal about databases from this class. There is an academic side to DBMS, so do not expect this to be easy even if you've worked in DBMS for years. Exams are tough, but he explains what to expect. He usually curves in the end.

Comment:

Lectures were very difficult to understand. His speaking style is painful because of his thick accent. Luckily I had some background in Databases so I had gotten through the term fine, but those who would have taking their first Database class would not have understood what he was saying.

Dr. Sun is a nice guy but his accent made it very difficult to understand/focus during his longer lectures. His syllabus is disorganized, and he uses the "course messages" function in blackboard which doesn't notify you by email when you have a new message - so you constantly have to check to see if he has updated information.

Pretty easy class. Definitely a lot easier then my undergrad database course! The assignments are time consuming but not hard at all. I'd def recommend taking him for this course.

His assignments and exams do not match the syllabus. So most students end up getting poor scores. But at the end he curves the grade. Why cant he just give better exams to begin with?

Best Prof. in DISS so far. He knows his stuff and has an excellent handout - all you know to pass the tests is in the handouts, except a few things for which you need your lecture notes. I had several db classes - this was by far the best.

Dr. Sun is one of very few good professors at Nova. I took database class with a famous professor at Georgia state during my graduate study, but I think Dr. Sun did much better job than him. He answers your question quickly, he DID teach in the class ( don't expect this from most of other professors at Nova), He is my favouite teacher!!!

Lecture notes mostly summarized the textbook, so they were of limited utility. Exam times are short for effort required to finish them, so plan accordingly. The final came out on Monday morning and was due Wednesdlay night, which is short time for a distance-learning test. It would probably help to acquire some of the books on his reading list.

Comment:

Dr. Sun was among the small elite of good professors at Nova. He provided feedback quickly. He was often hard to understand due to his heavy accent which at times added humor to his lecture. If you see him ever smile, consider it a rare occasion. I tried to but was unsuccessful. I give him an overal A- grade. His communication skills C.

Don't know what he's smoking, but it has to be good. Doesn't look at the class when he lectures, looks at the ceiling instead. The final covers topics that were not explained or covered in the class, and is used to spread out grades. Don't question grade, or it will be lowered. Also, the forums that he doesn't mention will count toward grade.

The required understanding exceeds the knowledge level of anyone who does not work in DB or one who does not have strong DB skills. The final exam tests material that was never examined in detail or practiced on assignments. The final exam seems to be used as a method to lower grades.

English is very poor, and will often answer the same question multiple different ways. Seemed to randomly grade the final exam. It was as if he chose your grade, and then took the right number of points off the final for you to get that grade.
