Comment:

Will start off by saying we did have a rough semester, and each class is different. But overall very hard to follow, and brags about personal accomplishments to the point of telling students to hold on to their questions while she talks about something unrelated. Class did not foster a love for or clear understanding about the illustration field.

I had a positive experience, and she gave some very helpful advice in building my portfolio, when she really cares for a student, a student can really excel with her help. though I am keenly aware that some of my classmates are neglected. She is relatively easy on grading.

Does not give good feedback or inspire students to be better. She really doesn't care about her students. Told a fellow student they wouldn't make it in the design world. The work isnt bad, but her attitude is. I don't think that she is passionate about teaching, nor do I think that she's helpful. Wouldnt take her again unless there was no choice

Comment:

Karen is one of the few design teachers that genuinely cares about her student's success. Her in-depth and thoughtful projects promote student learning and useful hands on experience. Through her courses and after graduation, she is there for her students in any way they need to excel in their career path. Great teacher, and asset to Umass Lowell

Karen is an incredible professor. She genuinely cares about the success of her students. She offers constructive, honest, feedback. Her feedback made my work stronger. She was always pushing me to do more and it was exhausting, but hard work always pays off. It was an extraordinary experience. I would do it all over again. I would highly recommend.

Karen is tough no doubt about it, but she does it because she wants to see you succeed. It's a tough world out there is design land and she is grooming you, giving you the confidence you will need to be the best designer you can be.

Karen is scatterbrained, overly talkative, and doesn't offer any helpful feedback. Although she's a decent person, she barely teaches. She thinks that by flashing a book at you or emailing you a link, you'll become knowledgeable on new material. Instead of taking class time to teach, she leaves the room and then comes back to assign more projects.

She is unorganized, scatterbrained, and harsh. I don't think anything I produced in her class is worthy of putting in my portfolio because her suggestions are based on personal aesthetics and not whether or not something is actually good or bad design. Be prepared for assigning new projects at random and having no real idea when things are due.

Karen is a great and inspiring professor! She challenges her students and helps them show their best work out there. Her critiques definitely helped enhance my skills and creativity. I will take the knowledge and experience I have gained from her and apply it throughout my career. Thank you for your support Karen!

I had Karen as my senior studio advisor and it was a great experience. As an illustration major, it was extremely important that I studied with a professor with expertise in this field. Karen does not disappoint. She is highly knowledgable, clear in her expectations, a fair grader, and gave valuable feedback. I would highly recommend!

Karen is a very passionate and inspiring teacher. She cares a great deal about her student's success and future careers. Although she talks very fast and has quick turn around projects, her main goal is to prepare her students for the real world. She has driven me and given me the tools to work harder in my major.

If you take a class with Karen you are likely to be stressed out and have a hard time keeping up with her fast speech. However, she genuinely cares about the success and potential of her students. With this in mind she gives challenging projects and deadlines but only to prepare her students for their future careers.

Comment:

One of the most confusing professors and least organized. Karen has had many conflicts with students and is extremely immature with these conflicts. Karen is degrading and puts down students. I do not have ANY portfolio pieces from the class I took with her and did not learn any formal design skills. Karen also does not support UML AIGA.

Does not show up for class until 8:30-9AM when the class starts at 8. Blew me off twice for a meeting then rushed through it when we finally met. Does not show genuine interest in students. Often tells students that they will amount to nothing. Even made a comment to a student that they will just work at a pizza place forever. You decide.

This woman questioned me about my major that im actually passionate about. She was extremely mean and never helped us or gave us advice. She also would pick your work apart but wouldnt explain what was even wrong with it. She ruined the class for me

Karen is hit or miss, I've had her for three classes. She would be an excellent teacher if she left politics out of the classroom. She has a good eye for design but its obvious she is an illustrator before a graphic designer.

This professor is imposssible to understand. she talks a mile a minute, she is not structured, no grades are given back, there is no syllabus that we follow, she often gives multiple projects at once. many times when i have tried to ask her for help she talks down to me, she is extremly condiscending and rude. she does not reply to emails .

She is scatterbrained and is very opinionated. Whatever she thinks is correct, is what goes, you cannot change her mind. If you aren't on her good side you will not do good in her class. She has favorites, so if you're a favorite, you're good to go, if not, I wouldn't take any studios with her
