I realized as soon as I saw Prof. Hagen for the first time that he is my biological father. We just kind of connected, ya know? It's like 18 years of childhood memories went flashing before my eyes: what could have been, if he had not given me up for adoption? I don't know if he remembers me. I'll never tell. He is happy, and I would just ruin it.

Hes a good guy but absolutely horrendous at teaching and staying organized. However this is offset by his lenient grading on lab assignments and notebook reports. The final was written really poorly but just spend time after every lab to make sure you understand everything and itll be do-able.

Some of these reviews are very mean. Dr. Hagen is a very nice person just not super organized with instructions. Thats the main issue with this class. The instructions often contradict each other and there's a lot of confusion about which we are supposed to follow. But Dr. Hagen himself is very smart and nice.

no direction no help no idea what's going on at any time during the class. the most inefficient class I've ever been in - biggest waste of time - averages are way below an F!!!!!! hate this class. currently been in the "lecture" portion for almost 2 hours and he doesn't even know when our final is

i did great in lecture (A-, which with the current curriculum, students know is not very easy to get at all) but horrible in this class. no direction offered by hagen or TAs, who also had no idea what was happening.

the whole lab is 3 hrs long but for 1.5 hours he lectures on random things that dont apply to lab. labs actually arent that hard and depending on your TA, the postlab hwk can be graded pretty leniently. final was cancer and on the random stuff he lectured about each week. unaccessible out of class. even the TAs didnt know what was happening.

I thought this was a chemistry class. It was not. It was a theology class, because I made peace with God this semester. It turns out that Hell is real.

An awful professor. Finds a way to make everything as boring and as bland as possible. Nobody in lab has any idea what is going on, including the TAs. There is no learning involved in this course. This man is very knowledgeable, but he chose the wrong career path. This course is not up to Emory standards. Avoid him at all costs if you can.

I'm still not sure why he still teaches courses. Dr. Hagen is VERY knowledgeable in his crystal field (pun intended). However, he is unable to properly convey relevant info regarding inorganic principles. His exams were always surprising because it was content not covered in lecture but in the textbook excerpts he posted on Canvas. TL;DR: oof

If this man was as crystal, he would be ferrioxalate because we were all oxidized after his final. Terrible teacher. You will never know what is going on in his lab. But he is the most adorable, wholesome, sad gentleman you'll ever meet. He wants you to learn, but there is a huge disconnect between his knowledge and his teaching skills. Tragic.

He may be the most disorganized professor at this school. All we did was make crystals for 11 weeks straight, then take a final exam on material that was barely covered in class. If you get Hagen, good luck Charlie.

Dr Hagen's a genius when it comes to crystals, but he's god awful at teaching. All he does during lecture is talking about crystals and even the TAs are sometimes confused about the lab instructions. Grading was unclear as he didn't even provide a syllabus. The lab final was rough with the class average in the low 60's. Avoid him if possible.

Truly terrible. Unclear instructions. Usually the TA's don't even know what's going on and you fumble around getting unusable data for 1.5 hours before everyone gives up and goes home. I am genuinely angry that I paid money to take this waste of time course. I came out of this course knowing less than I did before.

Dr. Hagen loves his crystals and tbh we don't do anything other than that. Lab really doesn't relate to CHEM202 at all and the pre-lab lectures are so unnecessary but no one pays attention so I feel bad.

Don't know why Emory let this guy teach Chem lab. Pre-lab lectures is basically him talking about unrelated stuff and is a complete waste of time. Lab procedures are poorly written and you can only rely on your TA for an explanation. I honestly didn't learn much from lab all semester due to Hagen's extremely poor teaching style. Avoid at all costs.

Honestly just a terrible guy to take a class from. He can't answer in-class questions. He is unable to communicate in any sort of clear way (beyond that the instructions for lab are difficult to understand.. not because of the chemical concepts, but because of his terrible writing skills). If you can, avoid this man as a professor at all costs.

One of the worst professors I have taken at Emory. Not approachable and all he does in lecture is talk about topics that have no relation to anything. Unsure why Emory has him teaching Chem lab which many students are required to take.

Dr. Hagen is extremely smart, and let me tell you, this man LOVES, and I mean LOVES crystals. I had him for 141 and 142 Lab. He is a straight up G, and doesn't care who is listening to him when he lectures. He is pretty funny and the lab was honestly a joke of a class. A must take professor for anyone at Emory, regardless of major.
