There is honestly no excuse not to do well in this class. She tells you EXACTLY what she wants on the tests, and allows you to bring in a 3x5 notecard to all the tests. I can see how some people would find her intimidating, but she's hilarious and is super willing to help if you are willing to put forth effort. Got an A easily.

It's simple. Go to class, pay attention, and take good notes. She tells you exactly what she wants on her essay exams. She lets you write notes on a notecard to use during her exams. Do the Blackboard homework as well. Counts as a big portion of your grade. She's really funny and her class is easy if you apply yourself.

I was told by several others that this class would be one of the easiest A's ever - IT IS NOT. She "tells you what she wants" on the essay style tests, but later changes her expectations. A large majority of the class failed the first two tests - enough said.

If you have half of a brain you will like this teacher. Real and very informative if you pay attention!!!! Tests are now in essay format only, don't take if you are very easily offended. Shurlds is funny and witty and knows her shhh.

One of the most unorganized and scatterbrained people I have ever met. Doesn't explain things clearly, even confuses herself at times!! Extremely hard on grading. When her grading is wrong, she'll accuse you of cheating!! Many of her stories are borderline inappropriate too. I wish they would get a new teacher since this class is required.

Dont listen to anyone who says you will fail the first test. She says that to scare you, which maybe is a good thing because I was really scared about the first test and studied for it a week in advanced and got an A. If you put forth a decent effort you can get an A and she is funny and entertaining. Best class I've ever taken.

Prof. Shurlds does a pretty good job explaining complicated material in media law. You'll probably fail the first test, but don't be discouraged. A lot of people come back and make A's in the class. Just remember to study your notes daily and don't procrastinate on the group project.

Hm where do I begin? I had to get an overide into her class and right off the bat she was a **** to me about it...like it was my fault, and told me I had started off the semester on the wrong foot. U have 2 go 2 class unless u test out of material she doesn't teach. I could go on, but I won't...she sux. I tested out of her class and still got a C.

mrs. shurlds kicks ass. witty and very real. one of my favorite professors. don't take her if you want a sheltered storybook view of the world, she tells it like it is. also gives free legal advice. media law takes work but it's important info. great class.

Okay, if you have never had any journalism experience in your life, FOJ probably wont be that great for you. She breezes through subjects, tests you on them, THEN teaches you them if you dont test out of the class. I tested out of 2/3 sections so I only had to go to 1 section. i was happy to get the F out of that 9:30 class! shes a B to some people

I tested out of the class with the assessment exam, but Professor Shurlds was a fairly good teacher. Although my time with her was limited, her behavior was indicative of her desire to see her students succeed. This is by far the most real professor I've ever had. She has a real passion for what she does, and she doesn't judge anybody (students or otherwise). Her style is very progressive, and I've learned so much from her. The class itself is required and hard at times, but I'm glad I have her as a professor.

Hands down, the most influential teacher I've ever had! B/c she's a true educator, her approaches to teaching are wide enough to benefit everybody's learning style. Make sure you can articulate with your own words what the law concepts are and you'll pass the tests. Also, keep up w/ the Case Report - it's most of the grade. Oh, and no prudeness allowed - SHE'S HILLARIOUS!!

I had Shurlds just last semester- fall 05. She was a mess. The whole semester schedules and due dates got changed around. I was completely confused about WHAT we were doing and WHEN the whole time. But she does write back when you e-mail her, it's true. anyway, I was disappointed in the class.

I love her, extremely helpful. the class is whatever you put into it. i passed the first test so i never had to see her again but she remembered me and i emailed her a lot and she answered every time...such an imformative class
