Professor DeHaan is one of the best professors I have ever had. She is very tough but she will make you a better writer overall. You will learn to do public speaking and debating and when you need help outside of class (and you will) she is always available. I highly recommend you take her if you want to improve your writing and speaking skills.

I do not believe that DeHaan utilized the full course material (despite the fact that this is a one year class), and if you're not willing to put A LOT of work into an intro class you do not need to take her. However, DeHaan as a teacher is overall very concerned about her students' learning, and she's very easy to reach for help outside of class.

Dahaan is tough as nails.. but she's also a good, smart teacher. The first semester of the class was harder than the second and she also softened second semester too. She cares, but her dry wit can make her mistakenly come off as cold. Very accessible out of class. Prepare for public speaking! You'll have a good experience if you put in the effort.

Honestly, I was scared to take DeHaan when I signed up. In fact, I tried to switch to the better professor however, I'm glad I didn't. Dr. DeHaan is one of the best professors I have ever had. The assignments are hard but only if you leave it to the last minute. Going to her office hours is the best if you really want to do well and enjoy it!

The reviews below are very true. I highly recommend you do not take her. She has very dry humor that comes off as rude and is very bad at explaining the assignments given. Just take the other class and skip the misery of a rough year.

Not once did we use the textbooks. She put them on reserve in the lib, but we never discussed them. Writing wise, we haven't learned anything that we didn't already know from a basic english course. If you are taking a heavy course load, do not take this class. She constantly changes the syllabus and sends out last minute assignments over email.

DO NOT TAKE HER!! I am a straight A students and a comm major and I still got a C-! She is impossible to please, dreadfully boring and a pain to listen to! You will regret having her!!! Also never used the books!

Dehaan is very knowledgeable about Communication, and she does want her students to succeed, but you have to work for it. She isn't afraid to give you a D on a paper, in fact I actually received my first D ever on a paper by her, but she does this to make you work hard. Show up to class and go to office hours, and ask her questions. Don't slack off

Hardest class I have ever taken but I would do it all over again if I could. DeHaan is one of the smartest people I've ever met and the classes fly by because her materials are super interesting and inspirational.

This was one of the most rewarding classes I have taken at the College. That being said, you have to work extremely hard in order to earn a B+ or A- by the end of the semester. Dr. DeHaan is very willing to help; make sure you make time to go to her office hours.

DO NOT take this professor. She is impossible to please is an understatement. I went to all of her office hours every week and still could not seem to get anything higher than a 70. NO MATTER what you do you will not be able to please her. She is very contradictory in everything she says. She is the opposite of inspirational, only discouraging.

Professor Dehaan is not a bad teacher. She just assigns a heavy work load and grades papers very strictly. Some of her feedback on papers can come across as rude. If you are looking for a teacher to boost your spirits and inspire you, this is not the teacher to take. She also has a strict cell phone policy that is a bit ridiculous.

She may come across as smart and interesting. But she expects way too much from her class. She grades like a grad proffessor. No matter if you go to her for help, she will still grade your paper extremely harsh. It seems impossible to satisfy her needs. I would not take her unless you're REALLY good at writing. Most demanding class ive ever had!

Professor Dehaan is extremely demanding. She's very smart, but expects a LOT out of her students. It is very hard to make an A in the class unless you aren't taking any other hard classes. For a 100 level class, she grades at the senior level. But, you learn a TON about your writing skills and it will help for further classes in the major

Professor Dehaan is extremely intelligent,and a little intimidating. She has a dry sense of humor, but it adds a lot to the class.She makes you apply what you learn on tests, papers and in "real" life, which is a great way to teach such dry material. Oh my goodness. Hardest most demanding class I ever taken. But I would do it again and probabbly better if I could. She has a sharp mind, combine that with compassion for her students and she makes a great teacher. Hardest class I ever had, but she teaches you how to be a good writer. She knows a lot. Go to class, pay attention although it is very dry and boring. Keep up with the reading. Grade is comprised 80% test and 20% 8-10 page paper. It's a req for Comm but it kind of sucks.
