Kathryn is brilliant and a worth while resource to writers interested in YA fiction and getting published. She is extremely sweet, easy to talk to, and interested in helping her students. She provides feedback that is both helpful and encouraging. She never disrespects a students ideas and talents as a writer.

It ofter felt like she was just trying to use up time with her in class lectures. The writing exercises were fun, but nothing new or innovative. REALLY liked to talk about her own books, regardless of the relevancy to class. Overall, pretty meh, but its an easy class.

I was disappointed with the limited scope of the class. Reiss likes to stick to her planned lecture. She prefers to survey YA literature, rather than delve deeper into questions of craft. Her reading list is often dated, as is her grasp of the current market.

I loved this class. Katherine was very helpful and mostly receptive to her students. When issues of culture were brought up she was very interested in them and talked about them with the class. Problem: she'll spend her office hour talking to one student and won't check to see if anyone's outside, and won't listen to knocks on the door.

Not a good moderator for class discussions of work. Ignorant of other cultures. Easy A though.

Great person. Not a great teacher. If you're interested in writing, go ahead, take her class, but Mills should hire a better professor. Required reading should be updated; more variety. Be prepared to read some of her books = ugh! We talk about the classic children's books but we don't read them

Kathryn is genuinely nice and cares about her students. She definitely prefers a certain type of YA work, but is very accepting of other types of work. She knows the genre better than you, and has published more books than you. She's good at what she does

This teacher is very enthusiatic about writing and helpful when it comes to the publishing process. She leans more towards young adult fiction, which I think is great. It's hard to come by a teacher you knows the difficulty of writing for young adults.
