I had professor Ahearn for several courses while at OSU. If you get a chance to take him and you actually enjoy learning about literature - take that chance. I would give a lot to be in his class, confused and a bit intimidated, again.

Eccentric. Has a set answer on what a story is telling (instead of encouraging individual interpretation)that was individually very frustrating. Attendance not mandatory, but all of his quiz questions are discussed in class, so HIGHLY ENCOURAGED to attend. Loves to mark up papers, very rarely is satisfied with answers to prompts. Easy A if you try

Dr. Ahearn is extremely knowledgeable, with a great dry sense of humor. Don't be scared by his serious demeanor, he wants you to learn. If you show interest and effort, it will go a long way.

This is one of those professors who really knows what he's talking about. He seems passionate about the material he presents and keeps it interesting. Only the idiots who take this as a "bird course" find it difficult because there is actual work involved.

When I am in his class, I can imagine plucking my eyeballs out from my head, as being less painful that his class! He makes me not want to ever read again. DO NOT TAKE HIM! (unless you are an alien, then by all means, take him!)

Delivers fascinating lectures, I could listen to this man talk all day. Test material is challenging, and he won't meet you down at your level and humor bad thinking/writing, expects you to try to meet him up at his level. Which is really what upper division English should be all about. Recommended.

I've taken just about every class this man teaches. He's smart and knows what he's teaching. If you work hard you will learn, and you'll earn a good grade. However, he DOES belittle students. Don't think that he doesn't. I have never had a term with him where he didn't deride a student in class. I sigh with relief that it was never me!

I've taken three terms with Ahearn and can't wait to take more. His classes can be a little intimidating, but I've never seen him belittle a student. If anything, I would argue that he strongly encourages a love for literature. I highly recommend his courses. Just show up, pay attention and do the work.

First of all, he expects a lot from his students. Most people simply don't want to live up to them. He is intimidating, but if you know what you're talking about, he allows for open dialog. If you share his love for literature, you have nothing to worry about. I have never had any problem with his grading or seeing him after class.

I love literature and always will. However, Dr. Ahearn does his best to belittle students until they feel they aren't worthy of enjoying it. I'm not saying that he's not smart...because he's brilliant in many regards. He just doesn't know how to guide students correctly and only serves to drive people away from reading.

I think people mistake being a pompous jerk with competence. He enjoys publicly ridiculing students. I love reading and analyzing lit. I HATED this prof. I loved the lit we read, hated going to class. Ahearn is a condescending A**. All I learned was how to imagine myself on a beach instead of listening to Ahearn verbally beating up students.

He has become part of who I am as an English Major. He has more fans than he knows and he deserves all of them. His classes with change your life. Constructive criticism, in my opinion, is necessary to become the best reader you can be, and he will give you this criticism. Put your ego aside and just listen to what he has to say. It's worth while.

This guy's a jerk. He's smart, but if you don't live up to his abnormally high standards, you don't win. If you love literature and want to keep loving it, stay away

He is a pretty good professor, but the class is extremely difficult. He assigns twenty thesis paragraphs and you have to complete ten of them (the questions are sometimes really hard to understand). The class is very fast paced with little time for discussion. The professor is intimidating but he is willing to help.
