He's basically awesome and really intelligent. The first class he will try and scare you out of being in the class, but STAY, it's worth your while. It's isn't hard, really, but you have to go to class and take notes. There's 3 exams as your total grade. No text book use so don't bother buying it. If I could, I'd take another class with him.

Technically, attendance is not mandatory, but exams are based straight from the lecture, so it's important to go. Lectures are very entertaining, with some personal stories. Exams are multiple choice. Depending on how good your short term memory is, reading over all lecture notes 1 hour before the exam may be sufficient studying.

His lectures are really entertaining, and tests are based straight from them. He tells interesting stories; you can tell he likes to hear himself talk (which isn't a bad thing). Tests are straight from the lecture (it's worth repeating)... I don' think I opened the (online) textbook.

Great teacher, but very strict and mean. He denied me the right to the extended time that I receive through the University on top of an extremely hard test. He never responded to my emails either. He's a great teacher, but extremely unhelpful and harsh.

Murnane doesn't teach from a book, lecture slides, power points, or anything really tangible. He just lectures, its up to the student to get the information down the first time. He doesn't like to repeat himself and he does not enjoy questions.

Dr. Murnane is the best professor I have had at Maryland so far. He is extremely knowledgeable, but even more impressive, he is a fabulous transmitter of that knowledge. He inspires, humors, and is truly a gift of a teacher. You MUST take a class with him before you graduate!!

Murnane is the best professor I've had so far in my freshman year. He makes the lectures interesting by telling funny stories and jokes. He curses a lot which can be offensive to some. You have toread textbook stuff on your own a lot and come to lecture which is annoying but worth it. Hes strict but he really seems to care about his students

omg what are these ppl talking about this guy was boring and not funny..Im not offended by his jokes or anything but he was BORING!!! His tests were not easy. I took him freshman year and the TA apologized to us for the exams and stated how she felt sorry for us. Hes crazy!! And the textbook was necessary in my world i saw half the class using it.

Dr. Murnane is a great professor! His lectures are wildly entertaining and mildly offensive. Definitely attend every lecture and take amazing notes as he does not really put much on the overhead. His exams are pretty much right off the lecture notes. Definitely take him if you can!

Ridiculously funny...will relate everything back to sex, drugs, and flat out personal experience. Some will and do find him extremely offensive, but with my sense of humor I liked it. He hardly ever uses the textbook, and his exams are very lecture-oriented, so it's very important to go to class. I will absolutely take another one of his classes!

GREAT Professor! I took him freshman year, he really knows his stuff! You really don't need to buy the book as long as you can take good notes and come to class. He was hilarious, which really kept the class interesting. However, I can understand how those with political views on the more conservative side could find him to be a bit disagreeable.

I absolutely loved this professor!His lectures were awesome.He is pretty obscene and and crazy but his stories are so great.You MUST come to lecture and take EXCELLENT notes.You dont really need the textbook,tests are almost entirely (90% or more) on lectures.I highly recomend this to students who come to class, take notes & like good storytellers!

I loved this course, even though it was very difficult. BRING A RECORDER! He goes very fast, but REALLY knows his field. You won't get a better teacher. Tests are VERY difficult, but if you just ASK for help when you need it, you'll get it in spades. Love him or hate him, you'll remember his lectures for the rest of your life.

Murnane takes some getting used to for sure. If you get passed the incessant cussing and sexual references, he keeps class interesting and you do learn a lot of material. Read the book! Exams are 30 multiple choice questions in 30 minutes. He'll grow on you...
