One of the best professors at FIU. Does a very good job communicating tough concepts and making sure students understand. Really nice and helpful outside of class as well

The professor got rid of quizzes and instead made us do a bunch of labs, 4 group projects, and one final exam. Labs aren't very difficult. He doesn't lecture a whole lot but when he does, it can be dry but informative. He knows his stuff but can come off as condescending at times. Final exam was tough, have to write code from the labs by hand.

Very tough grader. Can come across as arrogant. Can be understanding. Can talk down to students. if you're an IT major he's your only option for Component Software Development so get ready. Does not curve. very cut and dry.

Think twice about taking Kip. He's a good teacher but expects you to read heavily and participate alot and ask questions. The class is 50% quizzes and 50% assignments. There are 13 quizzes and 5 assignments none of which are easy at all. DO NOT LET ANYONE COPY, our group on the assignments almost got penalized for it, Luckily he was understanding.

I took COP 4814 Component-Based Software Development with Kip Irvine in spring class 2016, and his quizzes are all fill in blank pure code. Most of the quizzes are based on the lab assignments that he was giving every week. This class is not easy.

Kip Irvine is a great teacher and a very nice person. He really cares about students and is very linient. His assignments and classwork were really fun. I suggest to do the classwork because he will quiz you on it. The good thing about this class is that it has no midterm and final. As long as you are dedicated, you will pass with a good grade.

This course felt like Programming 2.5, I am not even sure what Component-Based Software Dev. even is. I got an A though. The quizzes are hugely important, take them seriously or else you WILL fail. He definitely is passive/aggressive. All in all, not too hard. Just read exactly what he says, and do well on quizzes. And, you will need to know Java.

Grading is based on labs and quizzes. He drops the lowest 2 quiz grades. Picky about giving 5s. Labs were graded pretty toughly. "Everything in this world is not written" when no one turned in the amount of test cases he wanted. Quizzes are everything. One quiz was the difference between a B- and B+ for me. Passive aggressive but good.

Overall, don't slack on assignments and your reading and you should pass and try not to be absent too often, either. He doesn't focus on programming in the beginning, but the later assignments put a LOT of emphasis on it. Other than that, fairly easy class, you learn about software design patterns which is a plus.

Having taken Kip in a previous course, which happens to be COP4005, I already knew his teaching habits, and what to expect from his quiz. Though, in COP4814, he expects a lot out of you, so do not think that this will bean easy A without putting in the effort. You can get away with it in COP4005, but Kip approaches COP4814 differently.

Half of the class you actually learn from him. The other part, you're on your own (on the java stuff). If one student knows something, everyone else knows it too according to him. If you don't know java, wait until someone else teaches the class or you will fail like Jordan at baseball.

My only problem with Kip Irvine is that he cannot clone himself. If he could clone himself and teach every single computer class at FIU, we would be the number 1 cs university in the world. Weekly quizzes but if you keep up with lectures you will be alright. Assignments take time but he helps. Lectures are helpful and guide you. He is a genius.

Best Professor ever , super helpful , FIU needs more of his kind !! Take him , you won't regret it , but be ready to take a quiz almost every class , so you need to study at least before going into the classroom.

This class is a bit tough. 13 quizzes + 4 assignments. I prepped 2-3 hours for each quiz (my strategy was to analyze his example program for that quiz and learn its structure and methods), and got a perfect 55 on all but 1 quiz. He drops your 2 lowest scores. I wish the lectures were much more hands-on rather than PowerPoint slides.

Really Nice guy, Gave lots of quizzes but he also based them on handouts or power points he had passed out the week before. No final, so that was nice, he's really nice at office hours and whatnot.

Pretty easy class, he gives a lot of quizzes so you can afford to fail some of them and still get a good grade. Some assignments are very hard. I found lectures sometimes didn't relate much to the assignments, but you should visit him during office hours and he will guide you in the correct path for completion. He won't do it for you but it helps.

Assignments are not brutal but some may time considering your level of programming. Done in groups of two. 6 HW, 2 Exams, and quizzes every other week. Professor is always willing to help. Felt like we were doing all the learning by yourself at the end. Attendance is almost mandatory, could only miss two classes before points deduction.

Great professor. He tries to make the assignments interesting but sometimes makes them a bit hard (that's alright if you like the challenge) but sadly many of us work and there's not a lot of time to complete the assignments. The course content is too much (C#, Java, XML, Design Patterns, Security, etc) but it was interesting.

No doubt he will be willing to help you at any time, but be prepared to do lot of labs and assignments which are not that difficult but like any other programming class, some of them will be tricky to solve. Expect the unexpected for the tests. Pass the class with a B after having almost perfect scores on labs n assignments.
