Kirk is a wonderful man, but this was the hardest class I have ever taken. I wouldn't have taken it if it wasn't a requirement for my degree. The course is very rewarding however, after taking it I feel like I could fight a bear and win.

Kirk is super intelligent. His class is tough but not impossible. Kirk expects you to study hard and review the material outside of class, and you definitely need to READ the textbook to do well. Kirk is a good guy, and he wants his students to do well. Go to class, ask questions, and you'll be fine.

Kirk is very intelligent and knowledgable in his subject area, but his class is WAAYYY too tough for a 200-level class. I'm a smart guy and I enjoy a challenge, but to put this in perspective, I'm now in year two of grad school, and still have yet to take a grad class as difficult as his English 221 class. This one's for academic masochists only.

Kirk is an amazing professor! He is very enthusiastic about linguistics and is always available and willing to help you understand the material (make sure to read, though!!). I think that the subject matter is very interesting and I loved attending class. He constantly makes jokes and keeps the class lively. I'd recommend his classes to anyone.

Hazen is a great guy and super helpful; don't let yourself fall behind on reading, go to office hours, actively participate in class. This was one of the hardest classes I've taken in college, but if you put the work in its very rewarding. Hazen is master in his field and it really is an interesting class, just come in with a good attitude!

Kirk is certainly not an easy A. I have taken both ENG221 and ENG321 with him and they're both pretty difficult. However, he puts a pretty fun spin on a not-so-fun topic (linguistics) so I have to respect him for that. It's tough material, but his lectures are interesting.

The key is to go in ready to work. The first time I took this class, I refused to read or do the homework. Read. Do the homework. And go to class. It actually takes work to pass this class, but it won't kill you. Kirk is a great teacher and makes linguistics almost interesting. It's a challenge, but it's worth it.

He's a good teacher and is extremely enthusiastic about the course material. The book has everything you need to know to do well on the tests but go to class so he can explain the material to you. Study the vocab, do the homework, and know how to diagram to do well on the tests. The lectures are interesting.

This class is not hard if you actually read (READ, not skim) the book and pay attention in lectures. He's always really helpful, and his lectures were entertaining and interesting. He's a "tough grader" in the sense that linguistics isn't a subjective field like English is--you're either right or you're not. Learn to deal.

I came into this class with a positive attitude and I am leaving it with an almost nervous breakdown! This class has completely diminished my enjoyment of being an English major. His class is a requirement but don't expect it to be easy and Hazen is not helpful. He is a good guy, but worst teacher to teach an 200 level class. Study your vocab!!!!!!

In taking ENGL 221, I am 100% positive that I do not want to take anymore classes in Linguistics. I had no desire to take this course, and I really thought it being a 200 level class it would be easier. No such luck. The homework's are hard, the material is impossible to understand, and the mid-term is exceptionally difficult. Be prepared!!!!!!!!!!

Kirk is the man. The material is tough, but if you go to class and do what he tells you to do, you'll be ok. The quizzes are tough but the exam review sheets have everything you need to get through the midterm and final. He's hilarious and super helpful, wish I could have him again! I worked hard for my A but it was not impossible.

It has been 5 years since this class from hell. I can't believe students actually support this man. I had to take the class 3 times and I am a straight A student. I still have nightmares. This is the worst class and professor I have ever experienced in my whole entire college career. Run. And run fast.

This class was harder than my graduate level classes. Be prepared to spend more time on this class than you spend on all of your other classes combined.Enthusiastic teacher though. Interesting class but I often felt overwhelmed when it came to tests and quizzes. He acted like we were PhD students rather than undergrad. I got C+ and am an A+ student

I have read certain reviews here and have no idea who those are referring to. Kirk is an incredibly friendly, witty and knowledgeable professor. He was always available to meet and offer suggestions. I think some people confuse the subject matter with the class itself. Very smart, laid-back professor who presented an intense and interesting class.

Kirk keeps a light atmosphere in the class and class is normally entertaining to say the least. The material can be confusing at times but I got a B by just listening and reviewing my notes. I had no prior interest in linguistics but I am now considering changing my major! Even though the material may be hard I feel this class is very worthwhile

Dr. Hazen is a wonderful professor. Extremely helpful in and out of class (even on difficult question through e-mail if need be.) A little wacky, but I consider that a plus! Class is difficult, but that's not his fault. It's tough material. You will need to study! Left class with a new appreciation for the English language.

Kirk is crazy. That being said, his class is really amusing. The concepts can be hard to grasp sometimes, but he is always willing to help you out. The exams are hard, and you will actually have to study, but overall, you probably won't find a better professor for this class.
