Comment:
To whomever has a difficult time in mathematics, I do not recommend Marathe. There is no structure in his course, no syllubas. Instead, upcoming exams are given at random in class. Assigned text? The one created himself and he goes through it by certain pages such as "go to pg 24, question 8". Many colleagues drop out.

he wasn't helpful at all. He would answer/help with questions as long as he feels like he should explain it. He won't explain "elementary" problems knowing that more than 60% of the class is failing. If you struggle with math, DO NOT take him, if you are very good in math you might pass. He is also a tough grader.

He is the worst professor ever. So unreasonable, doesn't make himself available for his students, and revels in their failure. DO NOT TAKE ANY OF THIS MONSTER'S COURSES.

He doesn't speak English very well so you can't understand a word he says, he doesn't explain the content well and he's not accessible for consultation. He makes you buy this book that he made which makes the work even more confusing. You teach yourself basically.

He never gave a syllabus and would just surprise us by assigning massive papers and projects without warning. He knows his stuff, but he is too old to be teaching.

He does not assign any homework. He talks a lot of how to solve the problem, rather than showing us how to do it. Does not encourage to make you think how to solve something; instead, he discourages you by saying you did not learn your algebra. He respectfully calls you stupid (does not say that but we all know he means that). DO NOT TAKE!

As long as you study the chapters ahead of time and complete the assignments in an orderly fashion, you can succeed in any classes that he teaches. Make sure to read over notes and study smart. Good luck :)

Rude to students, very unhelpful, repeatedly calls students stupid Wrote his own textbook, contains no explanations or answers (says we won't have answers on the test so why should we need them to study) meaning you can't even try to teach the material to yourself as there is no way to know if you're doing it correctly

Does not perform algebra and trig steps so wastes time answering questions on how he got to the answers. Admits that half the class fails his courses. Does not do enough problems on the board, instead TALKS about how to do the problem and people get lost. Calls on students randomly. Wastes time giving quizes that dont count toward grade

As other students have mentioned, Calculus is not an easy class or an easy A. That being said, if you put in the required hours each week, you should be fine. He definitely expects you to have a decent background in PreCalculus upon entering the course, but he will do some review if required. In conclusion, not an easy class but great professor!

Hard teacher, by the middle of the term the class was narrowed down to 14 from the original 30 students. Thick accent, admits he has horrible hand writing and also has fatal typos and errors in the booklet he makes you buy for the class for $10 (he typed it himself). Study 3 hours every day, get tutoring and pray to something or you will not pass.

Professor Marathe is a brilliant mathematician who absolutely loves his students! If you show interest, if you care about mathematics, then taking his classes will be worthwhile. His course covered physical mathematics, a new concept that he himself was a main proprietor of. His brilliance outweighs all of the comments here.

He is a brilliant mathematician, my favorite professor, and has a gift for making the counter intuitive intuitive. I wont say he is an easy professor, but I did not miss a single class and enjoyed every one of them. He is always available during office hours and will give you all the time he has to help you understand the material.

I took Cal II from Prof Marathe. He wants his students to learn the material and be able to understand what the math means as well. I highly recommend his class if you are remotely interested in Math (esp calculus). If you attend class with interest and do your work, you should do well.

If you just want an easy A, Professor Marathe is not for you. If you are interested in understanding mathematical concepts very well, then I highly recommend taking him. He explains the material extremely well and you will come out understanding the course better than you would with any other professor.

One of the best professors at brooklyn college, he not only really knows his stuff, but is also genuinely interested in, and passionate about what he teaches. His class is not for slackers, but those who are interested in the material will find that he is a breath of fresh air. I have taken him three times, and would take any class he teaches

I took Professor Marathe for both Calc 1 & 2. His class is not for slackers, so do not take for an easy A. In order to succeed in the class you need to genuinely care about the material. He doesn't really assign hw so is in your best benefit to do as many problems as you can. Calculus 2 is a very hard and involve course. Study and ask questions!
