Abeysekera is a good professor and you should learn from her. She can get confused with her vocabulary sometimes in lecture. She is fair and if make a good effort, you will get a good grade.

Comment:

She truly helps you understand what the computer is "thinking" & how to break down a task the most logical way. She encourages questions & participation. Work with her and follow along during lectures- you will learn a ton! The course itself is VERY tough in the summer, but both she & the TA were there to help through email & face to face.

Course material was difficult, as I had no prior experience with Linux. She made everything very easy to understand and included students in discussions. She gives quizzes about every other class, but if you did the homework, they're not hard. Homework was long, but consisted mostly of following directions out of the textbook. Good class.

Honestly I took C programming with her and here is my experience. She didn't talk enough about the material on the board. She didn't even code anything in class. How can you not code in class??? She doesn't. She just writes the ideas for the code on the board. Gives HW that's too hard and doesn't give solutions to them. :(

Great class and professor. This class should set a precedent for every class offered at UHCL. A majority of the classes are worthless powerpoint lectures yet this class is actually manageable and practical because learning expectations are clear and defined, so studying and completing homework is a breeze.

This is the hardest I've ever worked in a class and didn't even get an A. The professor, while very nice and helpful, gives some assignments that take between 10 and 20 hours to complete. That's not an exaggeration. Much of the material needed to complete HW is not covered in class leaving you to research and scramble to figure it out alone.

First time teaching class. Class taught by two teachers. There was a lot of information covered so don't skip class. Class did not cover all of the book info. Labs and Projects were interesting and informative. I suggest having some knowledge of Linux operating systems for this class.

This class was difficult. Professor Abeysekera cares about her students, and she is helpful if need it. I think that the quiz times would be better spent working on examples similar to what would be on the test. Review examples for the exam would have been nice.

Kind of a crazy accent, somewhat hard to understand at times. Fairly easy workload, some of the programs are harder than others, and it can be a pain when a homework and program are due on the same day. Teaches excellent concepts for programming. Good class. I would suggest you buy the book only if you're not a programmer, I didn't open it once.

TA MIA. Class very tough. Studied book class used C++ to write C programs. Book programs would not compile most of the time. Very frustrating class. Most difficult class taken. Quantitative Methods for Management was a cake walk compaired to this class.

Comment:

Interesting course, alot of work though. Overall she is a very good instructor, I would take her again. Pop quizzes were a pain, often just went over material discussed in the previous lecture, so you need to stay on top of this stuff. Be prepared to spend alot of time in the lab, after the 1st test or so all homework will be done in there.

Very tough class but highly interesting. Learned a lot. She is a great person, and very willing to work with students needs. Don't turn in your stuff late. Start assignments early, they will take lots of time, but are informative. Tests are hard. Take 3 hours.
