Texas State is not a difficult school to begin with and Im amazed at all the people here who whine about having to work to get a good grade in his classes. Reading it never rains in tiger stadium was a good assignment and I enjoyed him as a teacher.

Comment:
If you are not a visual learner, do not take this course. Larry expects you to already be familiar with the broadcast style of writing and just jumps into things without explaining them. When asked questions, hed sometimes give sarcasm about the answer. And grading feedback is very confusing. Took as an elective for fun. Would not retake ever.

READ THIS BEFORE YOU CHOOSE THIS CLASS AS AN ELECTIVE! This class should not be taken UNLESS you are an electronic media major. When starting the class, you should already know how to write for elec. media. He doesn't have a TRACS site and you have to calculate your own grade throughout the year. As a person, he rocks, as a class, it's tough.

I like him as a person because he is very funny and and personable. Where I begin to dislike is how hard he grades and how unorganized he can be. He doesn't really discuss papers and doesn't go in-depth on how to with them. if you don't have to take this class for your degree specifically, I wouldn't recommend taking thus class unless interested.

Probably one of the best teachers Ive had at this university. Cares deeply about students and their careers in electronic media. Not the easiest class, but by the end of the semester it felt like a family gathering every day.

Professor Carlson is a great professor who values participation, and will work with you. But he is also really quiet, so I had to sit in the first three rows. Attendance is necessary to get an A, tests are lecture-based. Write down any names he mentions in class, keep up with current events in the news, and give the textbook a cursory read.

Larry is a great professor but you have to go to almost every class or you will not do good in this class. Attendance is not mandatory but he does not post the notes online so you have to go. There is absolutely no TRACS site so that is a little frustrating but overall a very interesting professor and class. He likes the students who participate.

Larry was an amazing teacher and I loved his class. He really cares about each student and will help you as much as you need. He likes the students who participate in class discussions and go to class every day. Attendance is not mandatory, but if you don't go to class you won't do well. I would take his class again in a heart beat!

Comment:
Carlson's conservative politics get in the way of forming a strong bond between professor and class. That would perhaps be forgivable, though, if it didn't influence the material. Professors can have a slant, but when it shows in your notes, it's unpleasant and makes the class hard to take seriously. Tests you on his off-topic spiels.

No book, no Tracs site, and no PowerPoint slides. Get ready to to take notes because the class is literally lecture only, so you can't miss because there's no additional instructions. The class is only 3 tests, so you can't really afford to mess up on a single one. Larry is old and quiet, but a decent professor. Just make sure you go...

As long as you just listen to the lecture and remember important names you will do just fine. Very easy and helps if you need it. He is very relaxed with rules and polices aka. phones talking. My only complaint and a small one at that is the lectures can seem longer than they are at times. Despite that an over all good professor, would take again!

It was hard to stay engaged during his lectures because he talks in a kind of monotone. Would not recommend. Too bad you the class was required for my major or I would have dropped it.

I took this course over Summer 2014 and I really enjoyed going to his class. Mr. Carlson keeps the class interesting so it wasn't too hard for me to pay attention. He is willing to help you out and as long as you go to class and pay attention you will be successful. Tests are based on the information discussed in class. Highly recommend this class!

Great Guy, can get a little sidetracked but if you remind him he jumps back on topic. IF YOU TALK TO HIM he will pass you. He wants to help and work with students, he also wants you to learn, strongly encourages attendance but not mandatory at all. Great Guy Highly Recommend.

Too interested in students. Not enough emphasis on learning marketable skills. Too many old stories. Not applicable to real life.

His lectures made me want to fall asleep. He requires a lot of writing--which should be expected in a journalism class, but he is bent on requiring papers on subjects that interest him and doesn't give the students any freedom.

Professor Carlson was uninspiring, did not show interest in student success, and his lectures are boring. His jumps around between topics which makes it hard to study for his tests.

Really great and fun summer class with a balanced number of library days. Tests were kind of hard, so really pay attention to what is being said.
