Avoid Jegen. Take any tax class with any other professor at IU McKinney. He's grumpy, unapologetic, and structures his class such that to do well you have to grind out a ton of practice problems. He has a terrible approach to a theory based class. I wish he would retire, because I will not take his other classes while he's teaching them.

Prof. Jegen is awesome. Go to class and take diligent notes when he explains how to break down a tax issue, read his tax texts when you need clarity, and go over his previous exams relentlessly. If you put in the work and study throughout, you can do very well on the exam. Not the type of class to try and cram for.

This man is speaking a different language from day one and if you aren't on board the train, he's leaving without you. That said, he gives out several of his old exams and (very lengthy) PDF readings that explain everything pretty well. I just worked through the exams slowly but surely and taught myself everything. Going to class is utterly useless

I had professor jegen for income tax, corporate tax, and estate and gift tax. I now own my own law firm and am financially successful. I attribute a majority of my success to professor jegen.

Jegen is a wonderful professor. He gets a bad reputation because his teaching method is not common. I started the class every day wanting to throw up, but once I realized that he genuinely wants his students to learn, the class became pleasant. It will be hard to find a professor who cares more about his students and their education than Jegen.

I found his class to be a waste of time. He didn't seem interested in teaching it and treated students poorly. I don't feel as though I learned what I had hoped to learn.

Professor Jegen is stubborn and difficult on the outside but he really cares that you learn the information. If you are respectful and engaged he will make the class worthwhile. You will learn more from him than any other professor you've ever had. If you like watching people cry this is your class.

It was an honor to take a class by this landmark of a professor. The class was challenging but that is what he wanted it to be and I learned so much and he gave me the confidence to be a good lawyer. Take him if you can but be ready to be put to the test.

Gets a lot nicer toward the end of the semester. You will learn a lot, but his lecturing is confusing and all over the place due to lack of a syllabus. Make sure you are ready to study 20-25 hours a week; huge time comittment. Huge amount of reading - start reviewing the material on his taxsite ASAP (despite what he tells you).
