Probably the best professor at our university. Vast knowledge of absolutely every aspect concerning Russian Literature and History. Moreover he knows everything surrounding the influences of Russian writers. He delivers his information with such decorum. I would take his classes every day. I even failed one of his classes but took it again!!!!

Incredibly knowledgeable and interesting lecturer. His readings of all the material we covered was insightful and engaging, though he can be laughably pedantic at times (I often cracked a smile when he got carried away with his own ideas). Can be very helpful though, and if you dedicate yourself and show your interest you can do very well indeed.

I can't imagine that a more inspiring and knowlegeable professor could be found at U of T. Everybody must attend his lectures at least one. That being said, it is a bit difficult to keep up with the assigned readings, and because he is so knowlegeable, he can be a little intimidating.

He's a very knowledgeable man, but can be very hard on students, particularly those he believes should study a certain subject. Definitely gave out poor marks in our class to those who were not continuing in Russian which was very unfair. Such a shame because I did learn a lot but ended up disappointed with his meddling.

I chose his Introduction to Soviet Film course in my last year to fulfill credit requirements. Livak's enthusiasm was completely infectious (a bit intimidating at first) and I found myself working harder in this class than on some of my more "important" courses. He can be demanding, but hard work is rewarded.
