Very passionate. Lectures cover mostly grammar and culture. You will spend a lot of time on the online interactive and doing exercises in the lernbuch. She is quite good and certainly engaging although she sometimes lacks patience. Would recommend.

I took Frau McMillan for German 101 and 102, and--going in with no German experience--I started to sink very rapidly. Don't take this class UNLESS you plan to continue on with German. Homework took me about seven hours (14 hours a week) and I still felt unprepared. She's VERY VERY VERY challenging, but amazing at getting you to learn German.

Great professor. Yeah, there's a lot of homework, but the only way to learn the language is to practice it. Other raters have said she speaks German in class and they don't like it, but she's trying to get the class to use the language. She also stresses the culture through German composers and literature.

Fantastic teacher, one of the best at U of M-Dearborn. Charismatic, enthusiastic and fun, she hangs out with the advanced students outside of class and always has a funny story to tell. Expect an education in humanities and ancient greek, not just the German language. She demands hard work but works hard herself and really cares about each student.

She's obviously passionate about the subject, but by God, the homework is an unnecessarily long and repetitive slog, she'll talk at the class in German for a solid 5 minutes and fully expects that you understood it all (which is irrational for a 101 class), and she just isn't good at getting the truly fundamental ideas across.

Pretty good teacher, but is unorganized. When not understanding something, she repeats it in German until you guess. Other than that, she is willing to help you understand whatever you need and is pretty flexible with assignments and help.

Liana is an excellent professor, very helpful, and wants her students to succeed. Letter grades barely matter as long as you try your best and improve, she'll give you a good grade. There's a big assignment workload, but just do it, it pays off! Participate a lot and try your best and there's no way you'll get a bad grade.

Liana is a fantastic professor! She makes class very fun and encourages everyone to do their best. There is a lot of work, but if you're learning a language, you can't just cram! As long as you attend class and just TRY, it is guaranteed that you will do well and learn.

Frau Mcmillan is the best professor I have taken at this University. She is kind, intelligent, and her classes are absolutely fascinating. If you want to learn German, this is the professor to take.

Dr. McMillan is a wonderful teacher! She expects a lot from her students, but she cares. The grading structure rewards repetition and learning the language. Expect 4-5 hours of homework per class. If you study hard and do the work, this class is a breeze! You will learn all the parts of German grammar in 2 semesters. Amazing!

McMillan is, hands down, the GREATEST professor I have ever had at UM-D. I have had her for four years, and I can truly say that I have learned a LOT. I have met Germans who tell me I speak like I am from Germany, that says something. All of these people saying there's "too much homework" are nuts, you can't learn a language without practicing it!

One of my favorite teachers for the semester! Very tough but that is because she wants you to seriously get a handle on German. She was much more comfortable with immersing students into the language than other professors. Lots of work, but I learned a lot more in one semester of German than two years of high school Spanish.

She's a great teacher but the course is very difficult. She takes German very seriously and loves teaching it. I had to do an average and most times more than 8 hours of homework per week just for her class. I would recommend her as a teacher and this course but if you are taking other difficult classes, then this is not for you.

There are so many good things I could say about Frau McMillan! The nature of languages courses automatically require more effort; she knows this and simply expects what should be applied. She likes participation, is very helpful and insightful both in and out of class, and she genuinely wants you to do well. She's also just an interesting person.

She's very fun to listen to. Funny with a cool yet very clear accent. She doesn't keep track of attendance but going to class really is important to be sure you don't miss anything. There is a lot of homework, but that's with any foreign language class. Besides, all she cares about is the attempt. She genuinely wants you to be successful.

I am very dissappointed in all of the bad reviews of Frau McMillan! She is my favorite teacher at UMD. Yes, it is a LOT of homework, but if you read the syllabus, she doesn't put it as a huge percentage of your grade anyway. The key to her class is participation & paying attention. That's it. This is my 3rd class with her & i absolutely love her!

All in all a very nice and enjoyable person, but as a professor she's very unclear with what she wants from you as far as assignments. Way too much homework for a 101 language class. This class alone had more homework than my other 3 classes combined for the semester. She's an intelligent person, but she isn't the best Professor.
