A very cool woman, but not the greatest teacher. Pretty much just reads off of slides, and sort of acts offended whenever someone asks a question. Maybe a good class to fill lab requirement because lab is super easy and pretty interesting.

I had a biology major before taking this class. I no longer do. Extremely frustrating with an incomprehensible grading curve. Actually puts fake questions on review quizzes to throw people off for tests. I tried to like her -- she was just a terrible professor.

Ludicrously hard tests. Review quizzes that are totally ineffective and have questions rarely related to the actual test. Repetitive, intellectually sterile labs. Higgens is a petulant and deplorable teacher. The fact that UVM continues to allow her to teach is just more proof that the administration is completely inept. AVOID THIS TEACHER!

Higgens was a great teacher who made bio more interesting by not only reading from powerpoints every class. She explains with clarity and is very intelligent. If you like bio at all, this class is a good place to start.

Not sure where the other commenters are coming from. Shes quite helpful, and available for extra help after class. I wouldn't say she likes to argue with the class so much as have debates on the subject at hand, that usually help understanding, not hinder it. Shes also quite funny which helps people pay attention.
