I'm surprised to see the poor ratings. Dr Matthes actually encouraged me to major in mathematics. I found him to be clear and knowledgeable. I did hear a lot of complaints from non math majors though, and I can see why he'd rub them the wrong way...

He is saying that you should know algebra 1 and 2 reasonably well before taking college algebra. You should know how to add fractions do exponents and factor. Don't complain if you are not prepared. Grow up...

Sometimes he's very difficult to understand, but he always makes time to help students outside of class. He also sets up a tutor just for his classes. Although the class is difficult with a little bit of extra work, you can get a good grade. I thought I would do terrible, but ended up earning an A in the class. Expect a lot of homework though.

He's old and stuck in his ways, he writes up alot of problems on the board, but doesn't explain very well how he reached the answer. He talks down to you saying things like "you should have learned this in 8th grade" and on our last test when everyone did poorly on it, he had the nerve to say bad test scores are not a reflection of the teacher

Dr. Matthes is SUCH a great professor for Trigonometry. He's really old school, so you need to show him the proper respect. It's a math class, so just expect daily homework. But, I really felt like I learned something in this class.

I wasn't frustrated at this class because it was hard, but because he didn't teach it very well. . . sporadic random notes that weren't well organized just didn't suit me. He's a really sweet man, just not the guy for intro calc.

I've just had him for trig so I dunno about his other classes but if you come into trig with a proper foundation in algebra you should do fine. If you can't keep up with it you shouldn't be in a higher class than 115 to begin with. But anyway I think matthes is alright, and he'll do HW problems n the board if you don't understand them.

Dr. Matthes is an awesome math teacher and really knows math. You will learn ALOT! (and if the dog doing Calculus on a calculator gets on your nerves, then learn to do math without one -you're just feeling jealous) Dr. Matthes is so friendly and loves his students.
