Prof Figueroa can seem like a tough teacher but if you show up, participate, do the reading, and show interest in the course, you're guaranteed a good grade. I really enjoyed this class and he is still one of my favorite professors. He is passionate about history and will put out whatever you put in.

Good teacher. As a student who does well in lecture based settings I was very satisfied. He is clearly passionate about what he teaches and is willing to work with students who are eager to get a good grade.

Figueroa is a good guy. He definitely is passionate about the courses he teaches. The caribbean history course was fairly straight forward and had a moderately interesting topic, however it was 100% lecture based. There were only 3 exams and they were not easy, but not impossible, either. Ultimately, I was content with taking this course.

Took Caribbean history with Figueroa. He's a good guy. This topic may not be first on anyone's mind, but I found it quite interesting. Sit in the front of the class, take notes, and ask questions. Office hours exist for a reason. Go to class as well, as he takes attendance. Getting a B+ as a freshman in my first term wasn't hard at all.

A truly passionate teacher. Cares deeply about the subject and really encourages students to participate. Decent amount of readings, as to be expected for a 300 level history but not to much writing. One of, if not the best classes at trinity and my favorite instructor. A must take teacher and class

I've have taken two courses with Prof. Figueroa, and he is easily one of the top professors at Trinity, a distinguished group in itself. Heavy reading, but well worth it and reasonable amount of writing. He grades fairly & his lectures are engrossing. An expert in his field-he knows his "stuff" and is passionate about it. I highly recommend him.

Prof. Figueroa is one of the better professors I've had, but I wouldn't take him unless the class really interested me. He definitely has unusually high/time-consuming expectations. I really recommend taking him up on his offers to meet one on one with you - extremely helpful. If you do like the content enough to work, you'll learn a great deal.

WORST CLASS/TEACHER EVER. never returned anything, awful grader, and consistently left the class alone. super boring and redundant. expectations were OUT OF CONTROL. spent the entire class talking about himself and his problems. do not take this.

I am a history major and I had Figueroa last year. Despite his various organization and communication problems, I enjoyed the class... but I did NOT enjoy this next part... After reading my final paper, he said I should "be a historian." He said he would help me submit my paper in the history department essay competition for next semester.

Literally the worst professor at Trinity. Doesn't show up regularly for class, never returns work (I still haven't gotten any of it back), doesn't respond to emails or phone calls, and has ridiculous expectations. There's no point to sitting through a class with him, you're just wasting your time and parents' money.

Seriously the worst class administrator ever. I call him that because he is not a professor. Professors give back work, show up for class regularly, and have reasonable expectations. He does none of this. DO NOT TAKE ANY CLASSES WITH FIGUEROA! Trust me, you'll thank me later.

His approach to historiography was INSANE. The other two sections of historiography did not have to write much at all (2 papers 5 pages.) Not only did we have about 2 page assignment for every class but 2 8 page papers and a 20 page paper with 30 sources for the final, which was graded ridiculously hard. Made me not want to be a historian.

Worst professor I've ever had. Moody, unreliable, horrendously boring. I can't complain enough. Often does not follow thru w/ declarations (I will email assignment tomorrow -- never does) Bounces as he talks -- funny at first, drives you mad though. If you meet w/ him he'll be nice but thats the only positive. It's not enough. Tenure made him crazy

Figs is about the best prof ever! Weekly posts on BlackBoard help to have a "discussion" before the class, so those who didn't understand the reading can bs now and get it later. For those who criticize him, you're at college to learn, so write what you've learned and chill. He's very helpful and clear in instructions, and very understanding. Hes#1

interesting lectures, nice guy, will help you, loves his subject, all that jazz. the catch: really hard papers with really hard grading because he already has biases set. few grades so everything counts. late on handing back. seems like he rolled one before class (nice). likes participation. not too clear as what to do ever. LOTS of crucial reading

By far the worst class I've taken here at Trinity. Doesn't hesitate to fail people for the smallest things, like format on papers. Course work was ridiculous: major test, 8 page, 10 page, and 15 page papers (11 pt font), and then every class you have to be ready to give a 10 min. presentation. Meets 6 hours a week. DO NOT TAKE THIS CLASS!

cancelled 3 weeks of a class that only meets once a week. completely messed up the final and caused a lot of confusion. doesn't communicate/respond to emails or phone calls. still, he encourages everyone in class and does know what he's talking about. just wish he showed up more and had his stuff together. could have been a great class.

Figueroa is a tough prof. but he is a very good guy and if you are interested in the class and working, he is a great teacher. If you talk and class and do the reading you will do fine.
