Maria Paynter is the best, most supportive professor I've ever had. She helped me become fluent in Italian with 3 months during our study abroad program in Pescara. It's a privilege to learn from her.

Professor Paynter was perhaps the best Italian professor I've taken at Hunter. She doesn't give exams outside the final (the testing consists of quizzes after every chapter). She cares about her students. Do all your homework and learn the vocabulary as best you can, because that will guarantee you at least an A.

Prof. Paynter's course passes on a teaching for life: if you want to achieve something, you have to earn it. She may seem strict, but actually she's maternal, understanding and helpful, if you give your best as she always does in her classes. Students who complain don't like challenging professors and aim at high grades with low efforts. Too easy!

Always prepared, respectful, overly fair, too nice, too giving. If you want to improve your Italian whatever your level then you should study with this professor. If you are looking for an easy grade with no learning then forget about it.

She is rude, unclear, offensive, intimidating, inconsistant; she comes to class unprepared; she makes sure she tells what she thinks of the work and she wants us to repeat her statement. She has an unclear grading sistem. She wants students with no brain. Never will I take one her class again.

Mrs. Paynter was great, she is very knowledgeable and passionate about the subject. She really influenced my interest in the subject and taught me a lot. Who better to teach a class about Italian women writers than an Italian woman herself. Great overall experience with her.

Great, wise woman. Must do readings in order to participate in class. She will love if you raise your hand and say what you think about the readings. Very precise grader on writing, listen to her side notes or she gets annoyed. Tells interesting stories about her experiences.

I have great respect for this woman, although she can be a bit intimidating because she is opinionated. If you pay attention, keep up with the reading, and are willing to participate, I promise you will get a good grade. Her classes are worth it if you are willing to give her the chance.

Respectful.Teaches from a feminist/liberal viewpoint. Prof's opinions are what counts when it comes to the 4 quizzes. Quiz questions are too specific. You have to read the material (mostly poetry and short stories + 1 novel) and attend each class to get her interpretations since they really matter. Final is cumulative and one 5 pg term paper.

I agree with the negative ratings below... she is quite tough (on the bad sense) and definetely does not respect the opinion of her students. If you are smart, refrain from attending this class !!!

I completely agree with the reviewer two below me. Some of the positive comments sound very suspicious to me; they immediately struck me as things that she would say about herself. She's only focusing on the comments that say she's a hard grader - as if we're all just lazy - and ignoring the ones that talk about how critical and rude she comes off

Professor Paynter is one of the smartest people I have ever met. She has very clear ideas and beliefs, and when it comes to teaching literature she definitely knows her stuff. She presents interesting stories for her students to read and ultimately, I got a lot out of the class. She pushes her students to do great, so one simply needs to deliver.

Hard professor who ignores all opinions other than her own. Definitely would not take her again. I'm surprised that she has such good ratings on here, but, then again, several of the more positive ratings so closely resemble her writing style that I shouldn't really be that surprised. Apparently she's as petty as she is difficult.

One of the most challenging professors at hunter, but the best professor to help you re-think the way you write. I had the best time reading those short stories she picked. She encourages students to write better through her comments on the essays and is not harsh at all. She is not a strict grader. One of the best classes i had ever taken at hunte

Prof. Paynter has done nothing but help her students as constructively as she could. Even though she is considered as a harsh grader, I think it is good that she is. I left this class knowing that my writing needs to improve and that she was not harsh with her comments. I think we need professors like her to help our writing to get better.

She seems like a lovely woman, really. Her stories are amusing and she very obviously loves the subject. However, she openly mocked the students who disagreed with her and graded papers very harshly. In addition, she blatantly played favorites, which made the classroom experience unbearable. I really wanted to love this class, but... Oh well.

Comment:
I do believe that Prof. Paynter cares about her students and wants them to learn. However, this often does not come across in class, as she is very critical of everyone's opinion. This greatly discourages class participation. I would tell this to her in person, if I did not fear being immediately shot down and told that I am wrong.
