Her lectures were pretty interesting...definitely could've been way worse for a once a week night class. She assigns a lot of reading but goes over everything in class so as long as you show up you'll be fine for the tests. All the writing assignments were pretty much effort grades as long as you incorporate some examples from the reading.

Jeez... I really don't know what to say about the class... Its definitely the worst history course I've taken at VCU by a wide margin. I dont think I knew much more about the time period after the class than before. I agree the class is easy, but maybe if it was harder I wouldnt feel like I wasted my time.

The lectures help in conjuncture with the reading, but YOU HAVE TO READ. I dont understand kids who claim Dr. Nelson(divorced now) doesnt like them, then say that they didnt read. Agree w/5/12/06 review-is mainly self-taught, and she makes it easy on you with weekly one page review assignments, and two fairly easy tests. Would take her again.

While I wasn't expecting an entire semester talking about just slavery, the course was informative and interesting. She is passionate about the subject, which makes a relatively dry subject that much more intriguing. The quizzes are simple, and the essays are easy points. The books are a little dull, but overall the course is worth taking.

I really liked this class bc it was easy to get an A in, as long as you did the work. She isn't very demanding, but is a little bit on the crunchy hippie side.

The only course of my entire VCU experience I completely disliked. Dr. Winship may have a vast background in 18th Century American history, but she overwhelmingly fails at teaching. She also seems uninterested in helping students learn about the subject outside of the classroom which is necessary to come out of the course having learned something.

What are you talking about? This class was easy, she is very clear about what we need to know, and she's really nice!My only complaint is that she went a too slow with some points, maybe for those who think her class is soooo hard.In college you read some books people. American History as it was meant to be told. Plus, she has cool jewelry.

The class has no direction at all. The teacher tries very hard but she doesn't teach you anything. Instead of making the class more interesting so you will do the work, she makes you do pointless busy work. Lectures are boring and from powerpoint. She makes you do pointless class discussions that do not help at all. Avoid at all cost.

Tough teacher. Really into history, not very good at teaching it. Really long lectures that did not help with the test. If you love reading boring history books like Myne Own Ground, take this class. Otherwise, take it from another prof. This lady is an awful teacher.

If you want to learn about the American Revolution, don't take this class. If you want to learn about Early American historians, this is probably the class for you. You'll probably learn more about the subject from watching Liberty's Kids. I have no idea why this woman is teaching.

Prof seems nice but the class itself is useless. We would spend weeks on end analyzing a poster from the early 1800s, while completely bypassing little historical things like Articles of Confederation, War of 1812, the Constitution, Confederacy, even though class went through those time periods. Tests are very random and lectures are pointless.

She is a nice person and wants to help her students, however, the class is self taught. Outlines are not helpful and the class is based on the works of historical writers, not raw facts. This is why the class may be difficult.

VERY hard. Too many readings. Too much work for a 100 level class. She is working on her Ph.D. and teaches like you are working on yours! lectures are boring and she is very rude after class. Not very helpful. Teaches for powerpoint and doesn't even put the notes online! NO TEXTBOOK!

Way too much information thrown at you in a disorganized way. Outlines are difficult to sort through. She teaches through a ton of reading! 100 level course, but more difficult and time consuming than some 400 levels I have taken. Must go to class and Must do the readings! Would not recommend her.

I very much enjoyed Ms. Winship's class. I felt that she was very knowledgable about the subject matter, was clear and organized in the presentation of the materials and fair in her grading. Did not feel this was an easy class (read the texts). I agree that it is very important to attend class. Would take another of her classes

Not very hard but like everyone else said it is imperative to go to class everyday and do well on the quizzes. I had her twice and I earned an 88 and an 86 but had I done better on the quizzes then I would have received an A. Don't be afraid to ask questions because you are PAYING FOR IT AND KNOWLEDGE doesn't come with a closed mouth!

I don't know why everyone else has sad faces... as long as you listen, take notes, and follow the outlines she posts on Bb, you're gold. Just make sure to study and go to every class. The quizzes add up in the end.
