Comment:
Disgustingly hard first test, made up for it by making the rest too easy. Unorganized, most lectures seemed irrelevant. Tests were 99% based on readings. You will do fine if you focus on random details of the readings.

Never have I been so frustrated in a class. She would spend who half hours (I timed them I was so bored) talking about mundane things like the tiles in the bathroom in her house in SE Asia. Lectures had MINIMAL important information. That said, everything you ever needed to learn was in the readings. In short: old. Needs to retire. Stop rambling.

Frustratingly unorganized. What exactly we were supposed to get out of the class I never found out. Hard tests, because the answers must be to her definition. Fair essay marker. She needs to take her own advice and ORGANISE the class so that people can follow her points. Wouldn't recommend her.

Margorie Mitchell is by far my favorite anthro proff... but her class is not a peice of cake. If you are looking for a challenging yet rewarding experience.. take this class! But be warned her tests are quite tricky and she is very picky about grammar... but unbelievably inspiring and interesting.

Comment:
The South-East Asia course was interesting and Dr. Mitchell seemed to know her stuff. Quirky anecdotes and info about her own research made an otherwise rather dry course engaging. I found her class fairly easy; because it was a summer course, she didn't give us a paper and exams were based on the coursepack and lectures.

Passionate, engaging; one of the best I've had. Well-organized for Southeast Asia, but I found her Communications class lost focus near the end. Her multiple choices are hard, but one of the few profs who rewards creativity and encourages independent thought for projects.

I loved all of her classes. Yes, the exams are hard--but if you study and think you will learn and actually retain the information.

NOT an arm-chair prof... she's got passion, cultural experience, an she is totally positive and helpful. I thought her tests were hard, but otherwise she is one of the best prof's I've had at Uvic. BOOO to the haters!!! Rock on Marjorie!

Her exams are extremely picky. She tests on things that the average person wouldn't even think was important. She a really nice lady and loves what she does, thats for sure, but teaching is DEFINATELY not for her.

As long as you take a South East Asia coure with her, be assured that you will learn something. Otherwise, the results are sketchy. She's mildly funny, moderately accurate, an all around mediochre prof. Not great, not horrible either.

Exams are tough and she's very picky, and she's abit off with her facts, other than that she's alright, definately not great or good. Be prepared to know alot about Southeast Asia even if your class has nothing to do with it.

I think the midterm lulled the entire class into a false sense of security. The final exam was a killer! Otherwise, a really good prof!
