As this is a theory class, it was difficult to keep up with the conversation at first, but stick with him and you won't be disappointed. He was willing to meet in his spare time to help with any questions and though his grading is slow, he's incredibly intelligent and fun to have theory discussions with.

PROS:Helpful, entertaining, passionate, intelligent, friendly, CONS: disorganized, slow on grading. Overall I would definitely recommend this class. Sometimes the grades came back weeks after I turned in a paper, but I got used to it. He dropped the comprehensive exam at the end-that was super nice. Incredibly helpful and cares about individuals

Bro. Burns' love for the humanities is infectious. I walked in with no appreciation for art whatsoever and finished the class viewing the world with new artistic eyes. Papers aren't that hard, not much reading, and overall a great class. I'd definitely recommend him.

Dr. Burns is a very personable and friendly teacher who is able to communicate his love for the arts and humanities to his students. He uses the suffix "ness" to describe almost everything. He is genuine, friendly, approachable and very qualified. He expects a lot out of you but understands limitations. He will bend to make things work for students

A nice man, funny and willing to help students. But the thing is,he is very disorganized,he does weird things with the computer all the time, the course load is way too much for an intro-class.5-6 tests,2 identification quizes,5-6 papers, lots of tours.Hard to prepare for exams, some stupid questions on the tests. Can't pass what he knows to the students

He's a good guy who LOVES humanities. I found myself skipping this class more than others because it just seemed to drag on. That's probably why I got a B. However, if you go to class and do the reading, there's no reason why you shouldn't get an A. He doesn't ask you to do ridiculous amounts of work.

I took 101 from him not as a freshman and wasn't all that impressed. He is an ok teacher, but the powerpoints(and that's all it is) get boring and he tends to ramble and spend a lot of time on announcement. The TA I had was arrogant and condescending and such a harsh grader that Burns was forced to raise his students' grades to make up for it.

I love how the bad comments are from 101 students.. Dr. Burns is interesting to talk to and very helpful. A little slow with getting assignments back, and the grading scale on papers is pretty steep (wants you to know how to write-the horror!). Quiz every class on reading. Easy tests. Study guide from previous class each day. Be smart, it's easy.

He is extermely unpredictable. The nature of his exams varies every time. Just go to class and listen to what he says the test will be like. The TAs graded papers harshly although little instruction was previously given. I was overwhelmed with the amount of events that were required. It was expensive and time consuming.

worst class at BYU. tons of busy work, worthless time requirements for lots of events outside of class. class is worthless but tests have questions about random class events to make sure you go. very boring and a big waste of time

Read the book and go to class and you'll be fine for the test. There are a couple papers but they are easy points so do them! He sometimes asks questions about random things that happened in class...so don't skip too often.

The guy is a genius in many ways but he does not treat his class seriously. You never really know what's on the test. In our class he made a ton of mistakes on the tests and assignments (like giving us the wrong test... seriously) and he would say he would make the points up to us. In the end he never did.

I'll agree that the class was disorganized, but that was part of its charm. I learned a ton, he is very helpful if you just ask him, and he is more than willing to talk to you. best of all is the disorganization. once you come to grips with it, it alleviates the stress and just allows you to freely explore the material. He is very witty

I love Dr. Burns!! He's fun, exciting, and very scatter-brained. Class is always an adventure, never to be missed! Make-up work is easy to manage if you're sick like I was, and parties at his house are always full of Diet Coke!

This class was one that came recommended too me. I cannot pass that recommendation along. The class was always disorganized, especially with dates for tests and papers. The lectures were a complete waste of time and had nothing to do with the tests. He would get off topic and then stay off for a large portion of the lecture.

I loved Professor Burns. He knew so much about American Humanities; not only that, he was enthusiastic and it was easy to share that love. It was not a stressful class, but I feel like I learned more in his class than I have in more stressful classes. He led some great discussions and was really interested to know what we thought.

Fairly incoherent during lecture. Tendency to go off on tangents. Tests almost completely unrelated to lecture and based mostly off of random chunks of the text. Nice guy with a love of what he teaches
