Comment:

took Color Pigment Surface which is basically Painting II, this class will not challenge you in the area of your creativity. If you take it, you'll be painting old-ass boring ass traditional-ish. Portraits, Landscapes, Interiors, Still Life, Rinse and repeat each category 4 times each for the WHOLE SEMESTER. Great Class, if you don't have vision.

I took his class my foundation year and he was my favorite teacher ever! He was the first art teacher I really respected. If you need help he will guide you. I like how he understands that each student has their own technique. I feel like if you respect him, then he will respect you. He seems to be very skilled himself; he has his own website.

I took three classes with Mark 15 or so years ago and he kicked my butt and I am stills a driven painter because of it. Students who tend to not like him seem to be the slackers. Yes, you have to be punctual. Yes, you have to do the assignments well. He trains you for the real world. If you take your education seriously then his class is a must.

Mark has been teaching at MICA since 1974, so he knows what he's teaching. He's really nice and quiet, but he's strict on attendance. He gave our class free paper to gesso, lots of times. I highly recommend this teacher if you're studying painting.

Best teacher i had, tough but I learned a lot through the process. I would recommend him to anyone! His classes require a lot of work, about 6-8 hours of homework per week. But you will be surprized to see how much better you become by the end of the semester.

Mark Karnes is my absolute favorite teacher at MICA. I learned so much in his Studio Drawing from the Masters class, and Painting the Figure Class. I think my art was looking so much better by the end of the class. I really grew a lot as an artist and learned some art history in the process.

he's only interested in teaching those that he feels a worth his time. He compliments and coddles a few chosen students and will not be critical of them. The rest of the class needs to teach themselves.

I was in his painting I class and I found a great amount of help. He was simple and straightforward in all his assignments and expectations( which is fantastic for new painters.) His critiques for this class touched on every painting and he encouraged the students to take a more lead role. I can't attest for his upper classes but I learned A LOT.

I agree with the earlier posts. He has his favorites and they can do no wrong even if they they put in minimal effort. His crits are extremelly worthless because of this. I would not take him again and his time has past.

I found his critiques to be boring and that those who worked hard and long on their projects received little critiques and those who threw something together were glorified. I didn't agree with his teaching and he seemed to know what he was doing. But I didn't learn anything and he is extremely over-rated.

There are some great things about Mark, but he is seriously overrated; most of the students who have epiphanic learning experiences in his class didn't know much about representational painting to begin with. He teaches VERY BASIC techiques ie. using a limited palette. He is a passionate painter, but an extremely boring lecturer.

Best teacher I had in MICA and I was an Illustration major. I tried my ass off thinking I was going to do okay and he gave me an A even though I told him I wasn't the best painter in the class. He said he saw I tried. He's great and treated everyone with the repsect. However has issues in the class is because they didn't put there all.

Agreeing with the above, terribly ****. Worked like a dog and the guys who did hardly anything got A's. He is also about as interesting as dry toast, but as a painter I have a lot of respect for him.
