Comment:

I took Radice's classes six years ago. I chose to take two consecutive music history courses with him BECAUSE he makes you work, and I knew I wasn't going to do that on my own. Just because he makes you work does not mean that he's a poor teacher. I teach at a university now and quite frankly, I have my job partly because of his high expectations.

Maybe it's just me, but Radice is hard to understand most of the time because of his teaching style. Though his class really stressed me out, it taught me the importance of diligent work. If you put in the necessary time and ace on your paper, you will pass. In the class he's intimidating, but he's not quite as much during office hours.

Unbelievable professor. Take fantastic notes, listen to every composer's works that he teaches, and study in a group before an exam...and you're golden. Radice teaches as a storyteller so you really get to know the composers. I took a class form him every semester because I couldn't get enough.

Tests are pretty difficult, but if you study, you will do will. Term Paper is very difficult as well, but follow every rule in his book and you should be fine. Class is very easy to get bored in, but he does have very amusing moments.

I had a wonderful time in Dr. Radice's class! Many students don't take him because they're afraid of a little work. (It isn't hard work, it's just work.) I thank him for expecting students to actually know the information, and I thought his tests were the most fair ones I've taken. (The menu format was very forgiving.) Take his classes!

Dr. Radice is not considerable to extenuating circumstances. I was seriously ill to the point where I was bed ridden. The term paper was almost complete on my computer when I spilt boiling hot water on it losing everything two days before the paper was due. After emailing him he basically said tough luck. I vow to never take his class again.

Radice is definitely on the top of my list. If you want to be spoon fed, don't take him. To him, everything is of equal importance and expectations are pretty high. I wouldn't say he's the most organized prof, but I've learned so much from him: how to read, interpret, analyze, write, and speak about music. If your up for a real professor, take him.

Dr. Radice is an amazing professor. Yes he has a photographic memory and asks things you wouldn't expect on his tests, but I've learned more from that man than anyone else at IC. I HIGHLY recommend him.

Dr. Mark Radice is nothing less than the most important teacher I had while at Ithaca. I learned my most poignant lesson from him after making a dreadfully poor decision, and while sometimes silently from a distance, I learned clearly from him for years after. I admire his principle, and his knowledge. (And his sense of humor!) Take his classes. A+

Mark Radice sparked my passionate interest in the music of JS Bach, Handel, Monteverdi, Schutz and many other lesser known composers (like Reinhard Keiser.) I would not have known without taking Dr. Radice's class. I was at IC during his first year. He is definitely one of the best. His exams push you to REALLY learn. Creampuffs need not apply.

Although much of his behavior can really offend some people, he gets the job done. His teaching is clear and concise. It is like he cuts all of the fat out of music history so all you have to deal with is the filet, very easy to learn and do well in class. Given the choices, Radice is good for those that are not faint of heart.

i had radice second semester of freshman year. stay away from him. he's a nice man with a good sense of humor but his expectations of students are unrealistic (his exams are ridiculously hard - you can only get an A if you cheat since he uses the same ones every year). and i hate his tradition of taking his shirt off in class to show his muscles

As long as you take excellent notes from his lectures every class there's no way you can do poorly on a test. I especially like when you have to guess the composer from a work you listen to. Only good things to say him.

I really enjoyed Dr. Radice's history classes! Make sure you study hard and do the work--his classes are challenging. It's worth it though--you take a lot with you from his classes. I highly recommend him!
