Dr. Schantz is one of the best professors at Hendrix. His lectures are engaging and interesting. He is incredibly helpful, encouraging, and concerned for the well-being of his students. This guy is the best! Anyone describing him as rude is only misreading him. He's just shy sometimes! Take any classes he teaches (which are now limited).

Dr. Schantz really helped me learn the rigor of Hendrix academics. He is always thoroghly interested in what I am doing and was always around for a chat after class. He definately made me a better writer.

Love this man!!! Definitely straightforward, which hurt my Freshman year but truly appreciated my Senior year. Love that he loves Bruce Springsteen. Definitely gave me hope for my future.

I have never been as happy as I was in a Schantz class. He's VERY protective of his time in all situations, and he made every minute worth while. I still have reams of notes from his classes, and they're interesting reading even still. I hear he's doing more administrative work these days, and that is terrible. He belongs in the classroom. Those who think he is rude are mistaken. He's direct, that's true, but just a bit awkward in certain situations, but this shouldn't be taken as malice.

To some of the posts that describe Dr.Schantz as rude, condescending outside of class: This behavior can be explained by his self-professed shyness. He is simply less comfortable in unfamiliar situations. I've been in a lot of his classes and have never felt the bad attitude vibe you have described.

4/27 post hits Schantz right on--very intelligent, great lectures and pretty cool in class, but once you step outside of the class room, he comes across as a complete jerk. Seems to have a "you are just a stupid undergraduate" attitude.

One of the best lecturers I ever had. I learned so much about research and teaching skills, not just about Jacksonian America. My favorite history professor. Accessible, encouraging, funny, and challenging. Not to mention dreamy.
