This was supposed to be a hybrid course however she didnt ever teach in the classroom. She expected us to learn from random YouTube videos and we were quizzed on that content. She would upload 5+ assignments the night before they were do. Not worth it.

I've taken multiple classes in research before and also work in the research field. Despite that, this class was nearly impossible. I was spending at least 15 hours a week on this one class. Dr Brown is the most vague and finicky professor I've had the displeasure of interacting with. Avoid her if at all possible.

I was afraid to take ILS580 but Dr. Brown put me at ease. She always had time for students before and after class. A most excellent professor.

I was wary to take a class with her after seeing the reviews, but this class was GREAT! All the books were awesome, the lectures covered exactly what was going to be one the (5 question!) tests, and she graded fairly on the short papers we wrote.If you like to read and need to get a W out of the way, definitely take this class!

She stresses creativity in the projects, then you lose points for creativity (I'm not joking; she sent out an e-mail telling us this is why we lost points). She wants her papers dumbed-down to the formulaic 5-paragraph essays you write in middle school, yet emphasizes graduate level work. Yes, I learned a lot in her class, BUT none of it from her!

I don't consider this teaching. She is incredibly critical, so much so that her only comment on a carefully prepared paper might be that you improperly capitalized a word in a citation. Don't take this class! She assigns a 6,000 word essay, a 20 minute presentation, and then weekly essays or discussion posts so you never get a chance to work on anything else. Very harsh grader, when you actually get your grade back. Bases grades on essay structure alone. Very unclear answers and randomly adds extra work.

She gives alot of work, this is an online course and I'm taking 5 classes...this is the course I have the most work in. Although, most of the work isn't bad. She takes a long time to return grades, and its hard to ever get a 100 on anything. She is very critical, and will ALWAYS find something wrong even after you've revised.

Demanding course. Recommend taking it alone. MB does get snippy if people ask the same question repeatedly - being lazy and not reading all classmates' posts. She is incredibly quick with feedback to questions and returning assignments. Found the class challenging, but worth it. Recommend MB for 680.

Comment:

She gives students assignments for which they have been given no guidance, then critiques harshly. On the one hand she shares more info on the MLS program than the rest of the department put together, but on the other hand, she critiques like she expects students to disappoint her. As a teacher, she intimidates or depresses rather than inspires.

Don't take this class. Workload is approx. twice the average. The professor does not care (does not participate in discussions, negligible feedback on papers). Assignments are graded only for structure; understanding the subject counts for nothing. The professor sees the class as training for ILS 680 - any book history is incidental.

I don't know why this professor is still teaching. She let us know in the beginning of the course that our class was not a high priority for her and she certainly acted like it. Did not participate in discussions, a ridiculous grader, and just plain rude and snippy to students. Avoid her.

She is very smart, but that does not make one a good teacher. There was a caveat in the syllabus saying she may "get snippy" if more than 1 person asks a question. She gives relatively vague instruction, and then is a strict grader. There were a lot of busy-work assignments, who are annoying and pointless. I would take another class with her.

Yes, Dr Brown is short when talking online, but she's not rude, she just doesn't waste time. People who communicate alot online learn & prefer to be brief and to the point. Dr. Brown puts in ridiculous amounts of time for her students and pushes them to do thier best. This was the only class in my MLS program that I actually found challenging.
