Professor Mary Jane Smith is absolutely one of the smartest people I have met and it was my pleasure to take a class with her. Absolutely her grading is tough, because she expects a lot from her students. But her passion for teaching is unparalleled and her classes are absolutely invaluable. Don't shy away because it's hard, that's how we learn.

If you are taking a class with her as a first year student (FYP), don't. She gives no help to students that struggle. Her lectures are boring, the readings are long and difficult and she grades incredibly hard for a first year. What is supposed to be taught in a first year class was not. She has extremely high expectations so be ready!

This teacher is the most god awful teacher I have ever had in my life. She makes no sense in class when talking or when writing notes. You can not read her hand writing and when you can it is a mix of random singular words across the board with lines going to other words with no explanation. Lastly she expects dissertation papers for an assignment.

Very intelligent woman who has high expectations for her students. It is necessary to do the readings each night or you will fall behind quickly. Interesting topics, and overall interesting class. I recommend this class and others with her as long as you are willing to do your work each night and have the assignments done on time.

One of the least helpful professor's I've ever had. She doesn't answer your e-mails when you have a question or a problem. She also doesn't explain what she wants in an assignment very well. I felt like every paper I wrote for her was a shot in the dark.

African-American history class before 1877 was a joke. She puts zero effort into the class and then grades harder than anyone I've ever seen. A waste of money and time.

I lover her class! She has really interesting and insightful readings. The work load if fair. You have to read every night because the entire class is based on the readings. She's one of the best teachers at SLU and is a completely fair grader.

OMG! This woman can't spell and can't speak. She chooses some of the worst readings I've ever read and then tests you on the smallest details. Her grading is unfair and incredibly picky - very harsh on tests. The workload is heavy. Focuses on census data and gives no background info on the few topic

Absolutely terrible prof. way too out there left wing style. Never take a single class with this woman, you are better off taking a comunity college class, you will do better and learn much more. There is no way in hell she should be a prof. without a doubt the worst SLU prof. i've ever had.

if you want to learn how the white man screwed everyone, go ahead and take her class. Lectures are opinionated and if you disagree, she ignores you and moves on. Uses lectures to push her own mindless propaganda on students. ridiculous

I have never experienced such a slanted view of history. Her class only focuses on the atrocities of whites in the past. She also never gets anything done on time, her tests focus on minute details and she is extremely unorganized... a total waste of $
