The best professsor I've ever had. He is the most intelligent and if you listen to him, you will learn LOADS! He had tons of interesting experiences to share that will teach you more than you could ever learn from the text. Fair exams, interesting lectures, an all-around fantastic experience.

Sad he's retired. Mathias changed my life and made me switch to Anthro. If you sat in class expecting to hear what the book will tell you-- you'd be disappointed. If you actually LISTEN to his personal stories however, you learn more than you ever could in any book. His knowledge of black magic and tricksters is legendary. Amazing man. Very kind.

His experience is invaluable and I've come across his work in many other classes, proving he knows his stuff. His stories are hilarious and for those who like anthro,he's a must

Mixed feelings.. sometimes you love him and at times you don't. Lectures scattered and rarely finished, boring at times. Only take this course if you are really interested in anthropology, not as a filler. Hard exams.. multiple choice questions make up all of your mark. However.. he's funny!
