Comment:
I had mixed feelings for Professor Greenwald during the semester. Sometimes she's incredibly mean, other times she's nice and compassionate. DO NOT take as a gen ed. I took this class for my history minor, and even I regret it. It's a shame because the material is very interesting, but she kind of ruined it for me. Would not take her again.

she is a very passionate well spoken professor. Truely enjoys what she teaches. However, when it comes down to her class and assessments, you won't want to take her classes. Her grading is completely unfair (I.e. She took points off an essay due to a generalized title) there is no telling what she wants and even with outside help, there is no hope.

She's really invested in her teaching/students. You can't use technology during class, but it's not much of a problem because she talks slowly when she lectures, and holds class discussions on readings other times. The readings are long but interesting. As long as you put in a moderate amount of effort and can write decently well, you'll do fine.

She thinks everyone taking this class is a history major. I took every paper to the writing center and still couldn't get an A. The TA grades everything and the midterm and final are both open ended. I went to her to help me with my essays for the final and I still only got a 72 after writing exactly what she told me to write! Stay away.

Don't expect an easy A: I'm an engineering student & took this class to satisfy a humanities credit & I'm doing more poorly in this class than for those that actually satisfy my major. Tests are open-ended & essays are graded toughly (not quite sure if she understands this is not a W course)

If you want to understand patterns/systems in US history and really LEARN it, not just memorize dates and names, you'll appreciate her. She is SO knowledgable, and though she comes off abrasive, go to her office hours -- she will help you succeed & lend a sympathetic ear if you're struggling, NOT if your work ethic is crappy. Should be a W class.

Professor Greenwald is very understanding and wants you to succeed. She is very passionate about history and it shows in her lectures. I went to office hours often and it really helped make the topics become more clear. She gives a lot of examples and great feedback on drafts of papers. Her office hours helped me raise my grade tremendously.

I don't ever write reviews, but I feel it is necessary to warn you about this class. Three essays and two tests. Tests are not that bad because she gives a study guide that helps a lot but the essays... Grading is absolutely unreal and completely unfair. Even going to offices hours and the writing center for advise didn't help at all.

Professor Greenwald is a tough teacher. If you're looking for an easy A, this is NOT it. However, she is a very good teacher, and you learn a lot. You have to be willing to put in the effort to do well. Lectures are mandatory, not only does she take attendance, but she also doesn't put slides up online.

In my opinion Prof. Greenwald's greatest shortcoming is what she pays attention to. Once she stopped class for a full 10 minutes because she wanted to chastise a student for checking their email in class. Was that necessary? No. Just teach the kids who want to learn. Also a painfully hard grader. Wouldn't recommend this as a first history class.

I am now a professor whose students use this site. I took HIST 187, Women in the US I (grad course), Fall 1978. Greenwald is tough-minded and extremely knowledgeable; challenging course; when I teach, I try to measure up to her standard. Why does she not do better in this popularity contest? Hmm . . . Maybe so much the worse for the contest.

Lectures were mandatory even though the class had 100+ students. Dr. Greenwald was boring and hard to listen to, super offended by cell phone use: she called a student a psychopath for having their phone out and forced another to leave class. Tests and three papers are graded by TA who was harsh and unfair about expectations

I was nervous taking this class because of the previous comments. It wasn't a bad class to take. Grading is based off recitation participation, 3 essays, midterm, and a final. The midterm you pick the 5 vocab words you want to define and there are 2 essays. She gives you a study guide with everything on it. The TA grades everything!

Dreadful teacher. She is rude to just about all her students, and she definitely does not respect us. If it wasn't for her personality, her classes would be slightly enjoyable.

Awful. She assigned way too much work, there was obviously no communication between her and her TA and she spent too much time teaching about the same things. Most of the class grading guidelines weren't written until halfway through the class. Avoid at all costs.

this class was absolute hell. she thought that everyone in the class should enjoy it as much as she did. debates are very time consuming, everything was changed thru out the entire course. the only day she was even REMOTELY nice to the class was when a prospective student sat in on a lecture. too much work for a gen ed class. avoid at all costs

If you enjoy US hist, don't take her. If you want an easy A, don't take her. She's mean, she thinks all students are idiots, and she's a terrible teacher.Only really covers 4 main topics of US hist., extreme political bias, LOTS of work. HW sample for 1 week- 30pgs in textbook, 40pg packet, turn in a debate outline, and watch 2 full-length films.

The class itself is not that hard but she doesn't make it that enjoyable. Lectures are pretty boring. Two skips per semester. She seems to get aggravated with students more than normal.

I understand where the hate is coming from b/c she is a bit harsh in her comments. Def intimidating at first but if you are sincere about learning, she's sincere about helping you to the best of her ability. If you really listen to her comments, she basically tells you what she expects/what to write in the paper revisions
