He just stands there behind the podium in a monotone voice and talks and talks He was behind every single class never even got to discuss the actual chapters we read. He gives you about 6 different NOVELS to buy and we didn't even read one of them. He went at least 10 minutes over EVERY class. Paper topics were horrible and not explained.

Participate in every class. Doing so helps the class move along and furthers your understanding of the material. The class is very dry.

guy's obviously a great scholar BUT he expects the students to be experts in what he's talking about and teaches in a manner that makes things a lot more complicated than they need to be. Very picky grader and expects you to adhere to his opinion in essays, not your own. difficult and uninspiring, least favorite English course taken at Rutgers tbh

One of the most intelligent and friendly professors you will ever meet in the English Department. He is smarter than the average professor and yet, does not suffer from hubris. If you want to learn about 18th Century Lit, he is the man to take. His lectures can seem rather long, because he talks a lot about each novel and the historical aspects.

If you're a real English major you will love him. If you're an imposter hoping to coast by on PhD students conducting class based discussions where every poorly conceived thought is treasured as a gem, you will hate him. You will then probably come on this site and cry about his class, complaining that you actually had to read and write and think.

I'm sure he's a nice guy outside his classroom, but his teaching style is boring and oppressive. He does nothing to foster interest in his subject area. Avoid like the plague if you do not like early Brit lit. It will only make you hate him and his field of study.

very boring. though highly educated in the subject, he makes travel narratives boring and the perfect read to fall asleep. 3 papers, participation is must, but it's hard to follow what he's talking about unless you have prior knowledge on the subject. Avoid him at all costs.

Professor McKeon is BORING! I do not recommend him at all. His class is irritating and he often plays guess what the professor is thinking. His essay questions are incomprehensible and his lectures are mostly him spouting made up terms. Good note: his class is simply him teaching his book, "developement of the english novel" or something like that.

He is a really intelligent professor but a really hard one. Pop quizzes are difficult, paper topics very complex, tough grader. Overall a lot of work to pass, if you do not love English do not take him. But if you are a really hard worker and passionate you might be able to pull off a B or A.

I had him for 18th Ct. Novel. He is brilliant, but that makes his class harder than some of the other English courses. You need to be willing to work and think in order to take his classes. He's really sweet, and will explain anything you want him to explain, but you need to ask.

Prof McKeon is brilliant. Do not miss out on the opportunity to have him as a teacher. The class is a lot of work but his course has had a profound impact on how I interact with the literature in all of my classes. Also, even though he is a super genius he really cares about his students and is willing to help anyone who comes to him.

Professor McKeon is an exceptionally brilliant scholar and mentor. If you work with him and talk to him with the respect he deserves, he is very approachable and kind. Read thoughtfully and closely, and you should do well. But it is challenging and takes a lot of work.

His reserve is not snobbiness; he's a freaking bona fide genius -- and that makes him socially inert. But, if you give him a chance, he's actually very nice. He will help you grapple with the truly awesome intellectual terrain the course covers.

Professor McKeon is extremely helpful, kind, and understanding. He is also, more importantly, brilliant and approachable. He demands that you read well, read closely, and incorporate basic concept of 18thcentury studies into your work and your thinking, which is, of course, a great thing that is being demanded less and less at Rutgers University.

The best mentor I've ever had. If you have problems in his class I suggest you take some time to really think about what he is saying. Most people are turned off because he is a smart man and deals with difficult concepts, but this should not deter you from taking his courses, it should simply make you work harder. I suggest working with him.

Reading list EXTREMELY OPPRESSIVE! Quizzes every day of material to insure that the class reads (reading is 100 pages at a time or more). Class size can be large and his lectures put you to sleep, every class feels like he's reading a peper. BORING!

I had this guy for 18th century novel. He's pretty nice, and patient/laid back, but the course material was boring beyond words. and, of course, there was always that one windbag in class who ALWAYS had to participate and talk non-stop about these horrible novels. I hate that....
