Comment:

MR definitely fits the bill of the eccentric professor. He is very animated in his teaching which can catch some students by surprise at first, even though you quickly grow fond of his hilarious outbursts and respect his vast academic knowledge.

Your grade is mainly based on papers which increase in length with each paper. His feedback is very intense, for he wants your thesis to be based off of what he thinks. However, he allows you to revise and resubmit each paper which helps you improve your grade. Go to office hours before every paper so you know what he wants, and you'll be fine.

Well, where do I begin? I love him. A jewish grandpa. He's great, funny, caring, and just genuine. He wants you to succeed. Rose is extremely passionate about spreading THOUGHT and knowledge in the arts, so much so that it influences the class. I loved it. The essays were not terribly hard, and he lets you revise them for a better grade. Amazing.

Prof. Rose is probably the zaniest teacher I've ever had. He has a habit of getting off-topic during class and combining the info he's trying to get across with his own philosophical ideas, and gets very loud when excited or political (which is often). He gives an incredible amount of helpful comments on essays, and always wants to meet after class

Dr. Rose is zealous about intimately understanding music . His class is challenging, but he is one of the most articulate, accessible, and understanding professors I've had. Class is never boring, often punctuated by loud outbursts and boisterous piano playing. Although the work is challenging, I'm excited/inspired about an otherwise boring subject

Take Dr. Rose if you're a creative type and you like to think. Don't take Dr. Rose if you're if you're super type A, or if you are only taking theory because it's required. Rose is my favorite professor here at Vandy. He's brilliant and he's hilarious. There's never a dull moment in the classroom, and I always leave with a big smile on my face!

Engaging professor, but entirely self involved and insists his class take priority over every other class you're taking. His class (in Blair) began 10 minutes after my neuroscience class (in Wilson), and after emailing him about it he began locking the door to his classroom the second the clock struck 11:10. He also required us to buy his book.

Professor Rose was an inspiring professor. Going to his class was actually a pleasure and you will be laughing the whole time at his quirkiness and clever sense of humor. With that being said, his handwriting is 99% illegible, and you won't learn much about how to write better... Still a must take, GPA boost & very enjoyable class.

I'd be hard pressed to think of another professor who loves what he does so much as Rose. No hyperbole--his class will rock your world. His lectures are an extension of his personality-a bit ADD but all-encompassing, interesting, and passionate. He really cares about his students and is especially helpful (and enlightening!) during office hours.

This man is completely crazy but an amazing teacher. I really only took this to satisfy requirements, but I came out of his class having learned so much about musical analysis -- something I never thought I'd learn. I was truly inspired by his class. He can come off kind of intense but just show you're passionate and he'll love you!

I walked into this class a bit intimidated. I wasn't a music major and didn't listen to classical music really. Professor Rose completely blew me away. Incredible lectures, incredibly helpful, always willing to help you as long as you try, but even if you don't, he'll try and will you. This is what a professor should be...tests require you to think

Beethoven & the Beatles was probably the best class I ever took at Vandy. Too bad I didn't discover this professor until my last semester. The is more challenging than it sounds, but you'll learn plenty--60% Beethoven, 40% Beatles. Lectures are awesome. I never even liked the Beatles until I heard him explain their music.

beethoven and schubert seminar was so intense. prof rose is passionate and intelligent. he holds some strong opinions and is very composition/performance oriented in his lectures. office hours are great, dont miss out.

Dr. Rose is brilliant and TRULY cares for his students. His passions and knowledge span the universe, and his classes (esp the small ones) are very intense but incredibly rewarding. His Symphony class taught a jaded music major how to love listening to music again.
