Michael is a great professor and clearly loves what he does, but he has very specific expectations for papers (content wise) and if you don't meet those it is unlikely you will receive a good grade. He really cares about his students well-being and wants to help them anyway he can. He's very accessible.

Michael is my favorite professor so far at Smith. He can be a tough grader but he really approaches it in terms of helping you become a better writer. The class I took required a lot of reading but in all honesty as long as you read enough to write a decent essay you'll be fine. He's such a nice guy. Invited my class to his house for Thanksgiving.

Michael is definitely one of the funniest profs I've had. He also cares a lot about the material he's covering, and that makes him good at explaining things clearly. Though some of the books we read were a little dry, he managed to make them more interesting. Moderately tough grader on papers.

he is hilarious and one of the coolest professors around, hands down. he also improved my writing and analysis skills SO much. HOWEVER, i found his classes to be pretty much a bore. it wasn't necessarily his fault though, it was more the material he had to cover. in general, he is awesome, VERY understanding, and always willing to accomodate!

at one point, i wanted to have his babies. i'm over that now, but i loved thurston so much that i've taken three classes with him in the past. he's awesome and always gives interesting lectures. another good thing is that he's very accessibly and easy to talk to. one of the more laid back profs at smith. thurston and oram, they're the best!
