Comment:

Expects u to remember alot of 101, read the text before class or u wont understand slides. Very nice man, tries his best to explain concepts. If u have a question ask. Posts only 1 practice test so if u can, find other ppl w/practice exams since he uses the same questions from the past 1-2 yrs. Had to take ACS exam-sucked. Just read and practice.

Absolutely love his class. I hate chemistry and have never been good at it but he gives a ton of points for doing the homework and attending the lab which boosts grades. Definitely willing to help anyone who needs it and is very understanding. I have problems focusing but I concentrate well in his class. Couldn't have asked for someone better

He is SO boring in lecture. I always feel drowsy after attending class and he just confuses me even more if I go to lecture. Study from the textbook and mastering chemistry. His powerpoint presentations are poorly structured and not helpful. He thinks that 102 students should remember everything even though there has been a 4 month gap between them

It's hard to pay attention in lecture, it's halfway through the semester and half of the class doesn't attend anymore. Taking notes from the textbook will save you, as will MasteringChemisty. Laid back and wants to help you, but lectures are BORING.

Took this class over the summer. He expects you to have read the chapters before class..DO IT! He'll only give you as much help as the amount of effort you put in first. HUGE curve at the end (at least for the summer class). Really nice guy, and kinda looks like Leonard from the Big Bang Theory lol

The best professor I've had at UB, by far. He has fair expectations and sticks to his guns. He requires that you read the chapter before he lectures about it. If you do this, the class is engaging and very helpful. He's more than happy to explain any of the details that you are hung up on, he just expects you to put in a fair effort first.

Hes a nice guy and he certainty knows his chemistry. Detty expects a lot out of you so don't expect multiple choice exams or straight forward answers. You get to teach yourself a lot but he will always answer any questions you have.

It was hard to understand what he was teaching in lectures if you didn't read and outline the chapters beforehand. He would randomly single out people to answer questions. When there would be a low amount of people who came to lecture he gave out pop quizzes.

Dr. Detty is used to teaching grad students, and therefore thinks you know a lot more if you do. He doesn't like the fact that nobody attends lectures, however, i didn't seem to get much out of the lectures. He jumps around a lot and doesn't do very good example problems. He's a nice guy, but should teach upper level. Mastering chem will save you.

Dr. Detty very nice and wants you to attend lectures, but he may not be the best in taking general chemistry. Some of the stuff he teaches are hard to understand and his powerpoints go pretty fast. He doesn't give a lot of calculation examples, but MasteringChem and the TAs can help with that.

Just read the textbook. He won't answer any student e mails either. I tried contacting him about what chapters a quiz was on because he told us one thing and all the t.a s were saying differently, and he never answered me. Up to the moment the quiz was handed out I didn't know what material it was going to be on.

Overall he is not to bad of a teacher, best 102 teacher atm. He suffers from assuming that you know to much, can move to fast, and gives hard tests. He offered very little in preparation for the tests. He seems like a good guy and gives lecture quizzes which are basically attendance grades.

Buy the book, you will need it! Detty knows a lot, but doesn't know how to teach very clearly. He assumes you know as much about chemistry as he does. He's very willing to help, but it doesn't help if he assumes you know how to get from step 1 to step 3. He gives bonus quizes, but the book is waaaayyyy more clear than he is
