I constantly found myself having to wake myself up during lectures. He is an incredibly nice teacher and is completely invested in what he is teaching, so maybe it was my own fault I found the class boring.

I'm shocked to hear these reviews. Sociological theory can be dry (in my opinion. He did a great job at breaking it down and modernizing older concepts. Class was not hard. 3 papers at about 4 pages each. No midterm or final

the pepper needs to be revoked for one. class was horrid he is way too opinionated and if you disagree with him he gets fidgety. you have to read five books. write reflection papers, one every two weeks and a final paper encompassing all that you learned in 4-7 pages sourcing 3 essays from each book for a grand total of 12 sources-in 7 pgs. A DONT

It requires work, but the class seems easygoing and insightful. And then, at the end, tons of people are slammed with grades out of the blue. Does not communicate about grades. Probably inflates grades to make him feel better about himself. Worst experience academically yet, in my life. Unbelievable.

HE IS A HORRIBLE TEACHER. LIES ABOUT GRADES AND MAKES YOU DO ALL THIS TUTORING FOR NO REASON... THEN HE STILL GIVES YOU A BAD GRADE EVEN IF YOU DID THE VOLUNTEER TUTORING. CLASS IS POINTLESS AND YOU DO NOT LEARN ANYTHING. HE ACTS LIKE HE CARES UNTIL THE CLASS IS OVER THEN HE IS MEAN.

Pure awesome. If you care about the class, he is even cooler. He lets the lazyasses slide by, and opens to entire world up for those who care. The reading (Prisons and Ed) is a bunch of novels that are so wonderful. So much more than your average Explore class. This class rocks my world.

This dude makes you read 4 books in the whole quarter, if your up for reading then take him or else dont and he assigns you to write a 40 page portfolio and you have to go tutor 15 hours which is in your own time, take some other class if u have an option or else if you want to suffer then take him, this class does not teach u much about chicago

Very educational and informative, provides an enviroment conducive to progressive thinking. Sadistically difficult in terms of the grotesque amount of work; The portfolio made me want to hang myself.

Mike is one of the best professors that I've had since I started here. This guy knows what he's talking about & makes each class as interesting as possible. The discussions we had in this class really make you think. Everyone should take one of Mike's classes, you won't regret it, you'll love it.

I took his ISP class in the Winter Quarter 2004. Was not impressed to say the least. Yeah, he's young and relatable and teaches with enthused fervor, but his knowledge on the topic was a bit novice in perspective. The other problem I had was that on one hand he said he didn’t like the traditional classroom environment, that he felt like it didn’t a

Mike tried to make the class understand his extreme views about society, and was a very liberal minded professor. As an extreme conservative who recieved an A, I have to respect him for grading fair even though I gave him a hard time, if you are conservative politically, be ready to go to war.

Cool teacher and interesting class. Only have to write 3 papers, which are fairly easy if you keep up on the material. No exams. Speak up in class to get participation points. Have to do a short presentation in front of the class over material. Teacher is in a punk/metal band & knows his stuff.
