This class was a tough one, but definitely worth the struggle. The ideas could sometimes be maddeningly abstract, but Miller's passion helped illuminate them. He frequently stressed that he was available to talk outside of class. Overall, a wonderful professor.

One of Vassar's true treasures. Don't miss the opportunity to take a class with Mitch. The class will be demanding and he'll expect you to support your every argument with evidence from the text. However he's among the most helpful professors I've ever had - always willing to discuss an issue 1-on-1 until it's clear. Go for it.

What I wish I'd known: western philosophy 1 deals with thinkers from an extremely long time ago, and if you're not interested in philosophy it can be dull. I thought having an amazing professor would make up for my indifference towards the subject, but it didn't really. That said, Miller is a brilliant, cute, kind, and energetic professor.

Mitchell Miller. Wow. Seriously folks, if you don't understand the magic that is this man, you are missing out. Professor Miller sends you off into aporia, and then reorients you towards a higher understanding. In his classes, you study what it is to live the good life. Where else can you get academic credit for becoming a better person?

Comment:
Prof. Miller is very intelligent, but somehow he manages to overestimate himself. Nobody but him can be completely correct, because in his mind, he is not only the best philosopher (true-he can and will find a circle in any text) but also the best biologist, sociologist and psychologist. Be prepared not to be listened to!

Mitch Miller is one of the best professors I have ever had. His insights and enthusiasm keep me looking forward to his class each week more than the next. He is kind and generous with his time and attention, often staying late to speak with his students. His comments are incredibly detailed and sensitive to the thought process of the individual.

His lectures are well prepared and almost always interesting. If his soft voice is a problem for you, sit closer- he's definitely worth straining your ears for. Always enthusiastic to have one on one conversations about the text.

Prof. Miller is an extremely kind and intelligent professor, but more importantly, he is a great friend. As others have said, he makes even the most confusing texts crystal clear. I wish that he taught the whole class and was not just a co-professor. His lectures will truly open your mind. Brilliant and beautiful. Sigh.

An exceptional professor. Don't be deceived by his calm, soft-spoken manner - while he IS calm and soft-spoken, he is also extremely sharp and insightful, and not a pushover. Very nice, clear and helpful. Definitely do the reading if you're going to bother taking the course, since you can get a vast amount out of his classes if you pay attention.

Miller is fantastic. He has a very quiet, gentle voice and my first thought was "I am going to sleep through every lecture," but to my surprise, he keeps me thoroughly awake with his lectures. I'm always leaving class with my head spinning (in a good way). He is always willing to clarify or explain anything; he really wants his students to learn
