Funny guy who likes to make cheesy, sometimes stupid jokes. Other than that, he talks for a long time during class and is an extremely tough grader on papers and essays. Not often clear with what he is looking for when revising or grading papers. Wouldn't recommend him unless you are very interested in science fiction or crime fiction as a course

Other than being by far the most entertaining professor ever, he is by far the hardest grader I've come across ever in college so far. The quizzes are awesomely easy as long as you read the books. They carry great weight to assist your grade however, midterm, paper, and final are essay form and are graded extremely tough. Find another HUM

Lots of reading and have quizzes but the quizzes help your grade out. tests are essay-based and he grades super hard. Funny, nice, kind of weird guy. Makes a lot of jokes and is liberal. Gotta work hard for this class - I would personally take something else for a literary tradition credit

took this as a LT and HUM and not sure i'd recommend for someone not genuinely interested in the material. A LOT of reading if you want to do well. quizzes are very easy and gives lots of bonus questions but tough grader on tests and essay. Spent a lot more time stressing about this class than expected. Friendly guy though..

The quizzes are supposed to be based off of (9!) books read over the semester, but they're so easy that you can google a summary and still get a 100 on them. Also, he gives a lot of bonus points. His grading policies are more than fair. There is one really lengthy essay that he grades tough, but the quizzes bring up the average so much that it's ok

I took American Lit from 1960s to the Present (we read 8 books!) with Neil and he's great. He grades hard, but not unfairly, and his feedback really helped me grow throughout the semester. He is head of the graduate program (or will be in fall of 2014) and is a really valuable resource as both a professor and a mentor!

I thought I had already taken the worst class of my college career, I was wrong. This takes the cake. Not only is the material difficult, it is like swimming thru quicksand, with Easterbrook throwing sandbags at you instead of life savers. He makes it 100x harder. it's hell!!

Neil is a really good professor who is interested in what he's teaching. You have to be prepared to work - you read 8 books in the semester and one of them is about 600 pages, but he's willing to work with you on ANYTHING and all the exams are open-book. Just stay on top of the reading and you'll make at least a B. Plus, you can rewrite your essay.

This professor is the smartest person I have ever met. He goes out of his way to help his students, meeting them as many times as they desire. He lets you revise papers as many times as you want to earn a better grade and can make Lit Theory bearable. He actually is extremely hard but worth it.

Do not recommend! He is pretty entertaining (if you are easily entertained). He never takes class attendance, but will fail you for missing more than 3 times. I had a family emergency that forced me to leave for a week and a half, and he failed me, saying: "I just got divorced, and I made it here." Lots of reading. Doesn't follow his own guidelines

Fables and Fantasy: Ok, here's the scoop on Neil. His class's all over the place. You read 6 difficult novels throughout the semester. The essay he'll let you turn it in early and let you correct it. I went to him 3 times for the essay and every time, I got the same, unguided help and suggestions, which apparently didn't help me grade. Avoid Neil!

He's a pretty funny guy. he made me become more interested in the SF genre. You have to read 8 novels in 16 weeks, but you can easily find some torrents for audiobooks online. or you could buy them.

Neil is a good professor, but be prepared to do A LOT of work, like reading a 400 page book in only a week. I had to drop the class at the last minute because my GPA was suffering. I think Neil cares about your grade, as long as you show him YOU care. You must pay attention in class. I didn't do that well and had to drop as a result.

Ok, he's tough. But he's an awesome professor! Yes, he expects you to write well, but he also lets you turn in as many drafts as you want before the final product. He gives amazing advice on what to fix. It's really not that bad, but students, especially at TCU, don't like putting in any effort. Take his Science Fiction class. It's amazing.

This class is very difficult. At times it is just about impossible to wrap your head around this philosophy stuff. If you weren't able to take AP English in high school, beware! Neil thinks he's funny and entertaining. At first, you will agree, but he gets annoying fast. He does let you revise papers but he's a tough, picky grader. Not recommended.

DO NOT take any of his writing classes! NOBODY in the class received an A on any of the assignments. There were a few F's and D's, but most people received either a C or a B. I was in the C crowd. He also has a nasty habit of teaching us things that would have been useful LAST week.

Very smart and funny guy. Learned a lot in his class, but extremely difficult. This is by far the hardest English class I have taken. Honestly its more of a Philosophy class than English, so heads up. He lets you revise your papers, which is nice, but they have to be incredible to get an A.

He is super boring, hard, rather uncaring, and not funy even though he tries to be. I would not take this class, even though there were no tests it was still alot of other work to keep up with. You had to read a huge novel like every week.
