You dont need to attend one lecture to understand what your essays will be on. Your essays will reflect the lectures but the content from the lectures is not asked in the essays. Hes not a fair grader, and when you see him in office hours its hopeless he wont give you extra marks. Lectures he re reads out poems to you. Not a good teacher

Very energetic and enthusiastic lectures. He explains everything that you are reading and makes it very accessible. The essays are marked fairly (getting a B isn't hard if you put an actual effort in). There are no surprises on the exam. If you do the readings you can be very safe in assuming you will get a B minimum. Super fun guy.

He isn't a tough grader, unlike many of the English profs here. Lectures were interesting and I would definitely take another class with him. Beware of studying Paradise Lost for two months

Second time with this professor. I absolutely love his classes. I wish there were more to take I would be there. Do your readings, show up, and write about something that piques your interest in the readings. I love his diction, his syntax is inspiring and mesmerizing. He makes the English language beautiful and comprehensible.

I concede he is boring but it is because he's become apathetic towards teaching perhaps due to the quality of students at UofO, given that the admission gpa is 3.5 for admittance here I am not surprise. However, he is brilliant but he fails to challenge his students, maybe the this generation of students are just lazy which sucks the rest of us

Comment:
Incoherent, hard to understand, lectures are dull and feedback on essays is not very helpful. He is disorganized and taking his class would be a waste of time because he is not very good at communicating material to students. Basically, all he does is summarize the readings and there is no in-depth analysis.

I love this prof! He's incredibly intelligent, and clearly passionate about literature. People complain that he's hard to understand, but I don't see that at all. It's just that no one pays attention in class. He's actually very funny, but I'm usually the only one laughing because everyone else is on facebook or something. Sigh.

Genuinely nice man, and fifty percent of the time he is flawless in his lecturing. Other times, he is incredibly dry, his marking is very particular and his classes are boring. I gained a deeper appreciation for 16th century texts, but had to work my buns off to get a B. Wouldn't be my first choice for another class again.

Von Maltzahn is an intelligent man who really care about his students. He covers the material in depth and made Edmund Spencer a joy to study. If you take and interest in the course and try hard, you should do fine. Excellent professor.

I think he's wonderful. A pleasure to listen to - so articulate - and interesting, overwhelmingly knowledgeable, approachable, kind. Yes, he expects good work, but he is a fair and helpful marker - just because he's not a push over doesn't make him unreasonable. Take him if you can.

Though he was incredibly boring at times and painfully unclear at others, he's brilliant and approachable. His essay questions were fair and you should be able to anticipate most of the questions he'll throw on the exam if you read your notes carefully. Not a bad prof

I was scared stiff going in to this class because of the other ratings on here, but I thought he was clear, passionate, entertaining, and a fair marker. his questions are difficult, and I left the exam nervous and hoping for a B in S&M, and was suprised with an A-. Try hard, be scared, prepare yourself, and succeed.
