Comment:

Took Translation and Translators with Norm. Norm consistently interrupted students, when he thought to call on them at all. It got to the point where I (and I sensed this from other students) were hesitant to talk, even when called on, because we knew he would talk over us. He also incorrectly identified my year in my eval.

Comment:

Norm is not difficult to understand unless you are not used to accents of all kinds. He can interrupt a study but usually unintentionally. However, he does apologize and when he does recognize that he is interrupting he concedes his point for the student to make theirs. Just like with any college course--the direction of the course is on you.

I've known him as instructor and advisor--my 2bits. Meaning of 'eccentric': Norm's blunt, expressive, critical on an individual&class level, & deductive in the sense that he begins in left field then moves infield. The rest of the work/movement is up to you. Always take what you can get with Norm: He will use theory. Ask him to explain if u have ?s

Disrespectful, makes it hard to work on projects as there is no clear outline to any of the work assigned. Makes group projects a grading priority but does no work into helping groups form or choose topics. He is a nice guy, but he is rude, puts his hands up while students speak. Makes generalizations based on race. Boooooooooooooooooo.

Horrible! I am in love with Hampshire and many of the professors that teach there, but I must say that Norman was horrible. He is unclear, offensive, and knows very little about what he is teaching. He doesn't make any connections to the literature in class discussions and strays off topic almost 95% of the time. I would suggest you not take a clas

Once you get used to the way he talks (weird accent, stutter), he's a decent prof. When you get him excited about something, he's pretty fun, but until you see him smile, it's entirely forgivable to find him intimidating. Schedule office hours with him--it's so much more useful than class time.

Very Creepy, and try to get to class right on time so he doesnt plop down right next to you. To those who dont, he spits when he talks. I sat next to him during one class and some nasty stuff came flying out of his mouth and landed on me. other than that i think the man is hilarious.

Norm Holland is helpful if you are interested in a subject and have specific questions. Otherwise, it is difficult to conduct a conversation with him if you're only vaguely familiar with what you want. A little confusing to understand and critical. Do not look to him for confidence though, believe in yourself because he'll tear you apart.

Comment:

Most Hampshire classes are what you bring to them. Norm is a very intelligent person who can give you intelligent feedback. Your professors aren't your parents and they aren't there to spoon-feed you, they're there to guide you in your own work. So approach them like adults and don't label them as 'boring' if you can't meet them halfway.

I gather that many students don't feel comfortable in Norm's classes. I think the man is hilarious. He has a wonderful, subtle sarcastic wit. He is helpful, attentive. Sometimes it seems as though he is spacing out during class, but he is in deep thought, carefully considering the conversation. He assigns terrific literature, as well.

Sometimes it's hard to see what Norm is expecting out of you, but if you keep asking him to clarify he will eventually. He's absolutely hilarious, and while I had issues with this course (he and Laurie were teachign it for the first time and I think it'll be better the second time around) I loved being in class. Very neat guy.

Norm is a fabulous man! He let me chill in his office today when i was freaking out about classes. He really seems to care for us, the kids in his tutorial. I love him, he's amazing, I wouldn't want any other advisor, and i'm taking his class next semester too!
