If you don't like French Lit you might want to steer clear of her class... ALL French Lit! She seemed okay throughout the course, but now is has been four days since grades were due, and NOTHING is posted... really irritating. Get a good TA, thats all that really matters, I loved mine and that really helped. If you can, pick Ariane! Smart & Helpful

Since all work was graded by the TAs, it is difficult to rate this professor. However, I found her helpful if a little absent-minded at times (but she does have a class of 150+ students). Her lectures were interesting. Definite lean towards french literature, but she chooses a nice variety. Willing to answer questions even during lecture.

She is adorable, and helps those who care about what she is teaching.. There were four papers and I got an A on every one of them. Just take this class if you need a W, and don't want a ton of work. Plus, the books are cool because she teaches French Lit too..

LIT1 This is the WORST teacher EVER. She is SO LAZY. You can barely understand her and she lectures about meaningless material. Our first lecture was "What is a novel?". Class was insulting to one's IQ. She makes class mandatory, but misses lecture all the time. She's a complete joke. The TA's don't even know what to do she's so all over the place.

Easy class, interesting novels, NO FINAL OR MIDTERM. so if you are looking for a "relaxing" class, take this one. however, if you are looking for new insights and genuine knowledge about literature, don't expect much from her. she is polite but curt and has the tendency to pull a few no-shows. also, after 10 weeks she STILL hasn't posted evals...

One of the most horrible classes I've taken in my life. Steer clear of this professor if at ALL possible. She spent more than one lecture explaining what a book was, then required us to write a theoretical analysis of Breton's Manifestos of Surrealism, which is more appropriate for graduate work. She was also very rude to the students and TAs.

This was the most useless class I have ever been forced to sit through. As much as I love being read to from the text for an hour, the mandatory attendance was the only reason I showed up. The TAs were even vocal about their distain for her. It is now 5 weeks after the course ended and she still hasnt posted our grades. L.A.Z.Y.

If know the material, its easy notes-based summaries for essay tests. Trivial, so know really useless details. Hardly a lit class, its just memorization of facts from a book and as a lit major I found it didn't do anything to help me gain a better understanding of anything, or write better. Reading was ok, class simple enough. Nice, but curt.

prof. gaitet, while maybe not the best lecturer, made Lit 61 into a highly enjoyable, interesting, and informative class. her enthusiasm for the subject matter, French women's lit, and her obvious knowledge of the texts and the authors shown through in every lecture. plus, she goes over everything you need for the tests, so its pretty easy.

AVOID HER AT ALL COSTS. I'm a senior-year women's studies and literature major and I can say with certainty that she is the worst lit prof. i've ever had. she does not teach - she simply reads out of the texts we are reading and wastes my time three times a week. Boring. Stupid. Mean. Her tests are unfair, unchallenging and trivial.

I actually really, really like her. Maybe it's because she's interested in the topic (women's literature, with an emphasis on French women), but her lectures are at least mildly entertaining. Also, she goes over EVERYTHING on the tests in class, so it's rather easy.

i took lit 1 with her freshman year and now have to take lit 61 and i remember why i didn't like her. She reads everything straight out of the book, comments on maybe 5% of it, and reads more.

I thoroughly enjoyed her class. Prof Gaitet's style is best suited for students who are personally motivated and interested in the material. She was also very open to personal coversation and went above and beyond to provide answers to specific questions on the material.

She was the worst fascilitator I have ever seen in a classroom setting. She enjoys making people feel stupid, and if you get on her bad side she takes it out harshly on your grade. She often doesn't even bother to show up. Unreliable, unhelpful, and completely closed to opinions opposing her own.

Gaitet is probably the worst Literature professor I've taken @ UCSC (I'm a lit major). She has no control over the class (doesn't step in when students are making snide comments at one another), she dismisses students' opinions in a very condescending matter, and she's just a plain sadist.

Prof. Gaitet is the worst lecturer I have ever had. The books sucked too. I will never again take a literature class. Just because she does not like teaching lit 1 does not mean she has to ruin the class for all the students. blech.
