MATH0413 was the best class I've taken in my 2 years at Pitt. Gartside is passionate about math, and he always gave interesting lectures. He also has that classic British sense of humor. Some of the assignments are difficult, but he grades things fairly. Overall a fantastic class to prepare you for proof-based math courses.

Gartside is a very smart guy and teaches the material very well. Math 0413 is a writing intensive class so there is a lot of writing and there is a big research paper type project. He doesn't take attendance but if you miss a class you will get set behind. He is very available outside of class and is very willing to help if you need it.

This was by far my favorite class and professor so far. The class can be tough, but Professor Gartside is extremely helpful and fair with both homework grading and tests. The lectures are very interesting and critical to success in the class.

Midterm and Final are extremely difficult but grading is not done by points. Got a C on both tests and got an A for the course. Go to his office hours and show him you're giving effort and he will make sure you get a good grade. Be ready to do a lot of work.

Taught very well and gave his own proofs. Sometimes stuck very close to the book, but was a good professor, and added humor to the class. Tested fairly and graded well.

Awesome accent, straight from England. He could not have been more embracing, enjoyable, and educational. Under his rule, a math class is exactly what you always thought it would be.

Very intelligent professor. Knew was he was doing. Took his job seriously. Still periodically successfully added humor to class. Definitely recommend this teacher.

Some concepts seem you need higher math than i have, but the grading was liberal and the professor was interested in helping. Overall one of the easier classes I took.

A rather brilliant man and a rather poor instructor. He blasted through topics so quickly, it threatened to make students head's spin. Has a nasty habit of testing concepts that he has not taught. A friendly fellow with a snappy British wit, despite the extreme difficulty, it is still possible to be somewhat successful.

Paul Gartside is the man! His tests are hard and homework/notes are difficult to understand....but you will be endlessly entertained by his quirky Brittish remarks and since he wears the same thing all week you can dress to match! Enter the Gartside and it will be a ride like none other.

Gartside is a brilliant individual and a very poor teacher. I cannot in good conscience recommend him, unless you've already had calculus in highschool. If you are confident in your CALC I skills, his class may be ok, but if you are expecting to learn anything from your professor, avoid his class.

i'm pretty sure he is the worst professor ever. He should never be allowed near a calc class again. He makes no sense when he writes, speaks, or attempts to teach. Most students that have had calc have no idea what he is talking about. If you have a choice, don't ever take this guys class!

Gartside sucks at teaching because he doesn't know calculus. He doesn't even know his own notation, which is unnecessarily vague and confusing. Teachers who don't know their subject shouldn't be teaching.

His style may perhaps be confusing to some.. but he is more than willing to help those who need it. Also, all of his tests are OPEN BOOK / OPEN NOTES.. so honestly, if you do badly in this class, it's your own fault. Should be an easy A.
