Gottfried is absolutely brilliant. Very intimidating at first, but if you read, which is all he expects of you, and you share your opinion, he will respect you. As my thesis advisor, he's very helpful with my research, you just can't be afraid to ask him. His paleoconservative views are extremely refreshing which seems oxymoronic.

He's very fond of lecturing on the magnitude of his own intelligence, and he's extremely condescending. He forms an opinion of you in the first few weeks of class, and grades according to how much he likes/dislikes you. Your first grade will be your grade throughout the class, no matter how much more effort you put into studying for later exams.

Cleary a brilliant mind, but not suited to teaching a language. Goes off on tangents like crazy - interesting ones, but distracting and infuriating if you actually want to learn Greek. Must be fantastic in discussion courses, though, if controversial.
