Comment:
I've had Dr. Majkut twice, both for a class on Italian Neorealism and a class on Silent Films. In both experiences lecture notes were through provoking, lots of choice allowed for in written assignments, arguments were respected with an open mind, and most grades were posted the next day with brief but intentional commentary.

Comment:
This professor was the most interactive of any I've had at NU. His comments were on-target, thought provoking and insightful. He also accepted and respected a different but substantiated interpretation without falling back on the typical "I have a PhD therefore I know more than you" attitude of so many instructors. Bravo!

Comment:
His expectations are not clear. Comments on papers suggest he didn't bother to read them, when he gives feedback. His spelling and grammar is horrible, yet he expects perfection from his students. Disappointing. I learned a lot, but not thanks to him- I did the work and did extra research, which ended up being rewarding anyway.

Comment:
For a PHd his spelling was embarrassing. Little feedback, and the class was largely ran without him. If you end up with a good group it's fine, but if not, be careful.

Topic was very interesting but all his lecture notes were directly cut from wikipedia - for a grad level course?? Seemed lenient with weekly grades but never received any feedback on final paper. Very cryptic in his emails. My grade dropped severely and with no explanation in the last week, when he finally got around to grading. Be wary.

A lot of hard work and assignments were many. Grading was very harsh even when rubric was followed with little comments.

Comment:
I had him for American film; the class was very challenging because you cannot BS any assignment because Dr. Majkut will call you out on it. Grading for the final paper seemed quite arbitrary because you could follow his guidelines and still do poorly. I recommend his film classes, but he is way too much for literature courses.

Comment:
This was the hardest class I've had - 9 plays and the sonnets in 4 weeks, with lots of postings required. Life stopped for this class. His method of Socratic questioning in the discussions was fantastic-learned so much. His grading of the final paper seemed arbitrary and the response was esoteric and incomprehensible. So, a mixed review.

Dr. Majkut is a difficult professor, but if you are good in English and Lit. he gives you a fair grade. I really loved Dr. M and he's one of those professors I will always remember as being influential! :)

Clueless! Takes forever to grade and always has an excuse. Took on online class with him and he spelled things wrong and messed up due dates all the time. HARD grader - who knew a 94% final average is actually an A-?
